JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Yes, they are IDE, and they are daisy-chained on the same cable, same IDE controller.
RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 I know a guy who took a 'bad' HD apart...took the actual disks and put them back together into another drive. I don't think it gave him a long term drive...but he was able to save what was on it. I could try to find out what he did...
camhockey16 5 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 im not doubting you - but have you tried different jumper settings? if you can get it to detect both hard drives in the BIOS then windows should pick them up as well.the hard drive that has windows should be set to master and then the secondary drive should be set to slave - so that they dont fight with each other. or you put them on seperate cables (ide1 & ide2 ports on the motherboard) and then set the jumpers however you want (if i recall correctly)did i mention how hard it is to troubleshoot something without seeing it? RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 He's already said that the problem started without any changes being made to the physical setup of the machine/drives, so jumpers are not likely the issue.
JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 camhockey - I built the computer myself. The jumpers are set correctly. What I don't understand is how I went from it working one day, I shut it down and don't turn it on for three weeks, not touching it at all...to starting it up and this happening. It worked fine before.

Gwyren 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Was it in storage...or just shutdown in an office...? Could it have been stored and got too hot/cold/moisture...???This was my next thought. If it starts to spin we know it has power. JR, you said it was getting hot. Do you know if it is abnormally hot? If not I would guess it was the controller. One plus - it is not making a scratching noise so I would believe it is not a head crash.

That reminds me, my home server has been running without a reformat of any kind since 2000, I should probably look into backing up some of the stuff that's on there. JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Nah it was never moved. Been under my desk, well-ventilated. Not abnormally hot.
Jarick 5 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Well about the only thing I can think of would be to try the external enclosure. I have saved a couple bad hard drives with an external drive hookup, and at least that way you bypass the IDE controller.I'm still not sure how a passive device could throw off an IDE controller so bad that it locks up the BIOS. Worst case, it should be a drive not found issue. Typically if there's a BIOS issue, it's something more crucial like the RAM or motherboard.
bheidepr 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Can you boot to safe mode? (F8 when booting)Can you get into the BIOS?Does the machine boot when the secondary is removed?
JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Can't get into safe mode with the secondary, BIOS locks up with the secondary is installed, and it boots perfectly without the secondary.
Ultimus 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 You know, I once moved into a place with my sister and she had dogs.... long story short one day I boot up my PC and nothing... couldn't figure out what was going on. So I took it apart during which I smelled something and felt the slimy dried up pee. Ended up losing one of my HDs and messed up my graphics and sound card. It never really did work right after that. I had recently upgraded those so I had to go back to the back ups. Guess it was a good thing I didn't turn it on after the dog did it or I suppose it would have been real bad, but I did wish he would have done it while it was running to teach the mutt a lesson. Bout the only thing I could figure out as to why my PC didn't work....
Gwyren 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 JR:Based upon what you have said I would believe the controller on the HD has died. Again, Ihave heard that if you buy another of the same HD you can swap the board and, if this is the issue, the HD will work.
