Gerber sent to Binghamton

Recommended Posts

I see in the paper here our goalie of the future just got sent down to Binghamton for a 2 week stint, and then on waivers and then who knows?

I really can not imagine what goes through a players mind when he goes through a period like that.

I think of Dafoe or Carey as examples of players that went from being on top to being on the outs. Its just not goalies that have this happen. You have to be pretty competitive at that level, so you want to stay in the "show" plus the money aspect of it.

I bet you that playing in Binghamton wouldn't really be too bad, he will still get his NHL salary, but with other leagues in Europe to play for I am sure he will give up his contract to go play somewhere else.

It may be fun to play hockey for a living, but I really feel for those guys when things go the wrong way.

Just thinkin

If they're able to classifying it as a conditioning assignment, he won't have to clear waivers; that fits with the two-week period, which IIRC is the maximum for conditioning purposes under the CBA.

They won't let him go on waivers: there are teams that would give up a mid-range draft pick to get him, if Ottawa really wants to cut him loose.

He's a very gifted goalie who, IMO, was always more psychologically capable as a backup. The problem is that at the NHL level, a really good backup is inherently re-branded as potential starter material. That may be generally true, but not always, and Gerber is the best recent illustration.

I wouldn't expect too much for him if I'm Ottawa. Remember Huet only got the Habs a 2nd rounder last year at the deadline, and he was leaps and bounds better than babyfood is.

Calling Gerber the 'goalie of the future' is a little bit much, but it does suck getting sent down. Even for a game or two, it's hard to get motivated when you've been at the top for so long.

If someone would give the Senators a second round pick for Gerber, I would throw a parade in their honour, and I'm sure the Senators would do the same thing (and probably would have since about a month after they signed him). I'd be a little surprised if anyone even took him on waivers.

It's about time we finally did something with Gerber, every time i've watched him play, i get nervous when a shot is at him (I'm a sens fan) He's not a solid goalie anymore, and Brian Elliot is now our future goalie, i have great faith in him, and he's a solid goalie.

But for Gerber's situation, that sucks, so many years in the NHL and now shipped back to the AHL for a bit, i'd be devastated.

Alot of us here were really pumped when he showed up. I thought that if we could get Gerber or Toskala we were set. The sports reporters here were pretty sure we had the final piece to the puzzle. Shows how difficult it is to stay hot in the NHL

I am afraid that Ottawa is going to become the next Flyers - can't get the goalie to get them over the hump. (until now that is, Biron and Nitty make a great tandem)

Gerber sent to Binghamton, How much does that suck as a player?

At least they're still paying him his NHL salary to go there. I get paid a lot less to go there and can verify that is sucks 9.5 months out of the year.

Binghamton might suck for you......but just like every area, there is good and bad based on your perception and what you are looking for.
