Graf Ultra Break In

Recommended Posts

I decided to splurge and got some Graf G5 Ultras. They fit me pretty good, but I've got to tighten them pretty tight to prevent my heel from slipping a little. I'm sure the tightness doesn't help, but beyond that they are pretty stiff boots, and they are not comfortable. My question is, will these boots break in a little and become more comfortable? I'm only about 140 lbs and don't spend much time per week on ice. Off ice, they boots are nice and comfortable and seem to fit well. I know a lot of people recommend against top of the line boots for people that aren't heavier or don't skate a lot, on the grounds you'll never really be able to break in the skates and they'll always be uncomfortable. I'm just not sure if this applies to the Graf Ultras, since they're constructed somewhat differently from other skates as far as I can tell. Thanks.

The Graf Ultras are a pretty low-cut boot as well. Your uncomfortable feeling might be from this transition if you were just skating on a high-cut boot (think along the ONE95s).

I like my G3 Supras. They grip the heel very well. I felt fine in them until I hit the ice. A quick trip to the skate shop and baking/punching out of one spot on each boot resolved things. For a pair of skates that don't have hardly any ice time they're already very comfortable. That's nice knowing they fit good and will only get better as they break in. Take yours in to have them baked if necessary... it's a night and day difference I felt with my Grafs.

Hey man i bought G5 Ultras about 2 weeks ago i don't find they feel uncomfortable at all they feel amazing, but they did take some getting used too but i skate like 4 times a week so they are starting to feel really good now, i also notcied i had to tie them really tight compared to my old skates and what the guy above said about them being a lower cut boot , I noticed that right away but i'm getting used to it now and they feel great, i'm gonna get them baked this week

I did have them baked. Also, I had a pair of 704's in the past - same cut as the 703's - and found the heel actually a little narrow on me. Also, the cut of the heel on the 5's is a little different from the 3's, aside from the 3 being a little narrower. That, plus the fact I like the lower cut of the 5 made me go with them. If I tie the ultra's tight, the heel feels pretty good. I was skating in a much less stiff skate - a ccm v06 - so the stiffness of the ultra is something I'm not used to.

Not sure if it helps, but I came from 9k's into G70's and had absolutly NO break-in discomfort. Aside getting used to the pitch difference, they were super comfortable frmo day one.
