Graf 705 to Vapor xxxx

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience changing from Graph 705 to Bauer XXXX? I'm seriously considering the Bauers and would like to know what to expect. I skate fine in the Graphs, but they never felt as good as past Bauers I have used. (Too much forward lean)

Thanks

Graf not Graph ;-)

I don't have experience but I was recently trying on a few skates (b/c I'm hopefully treating myself to a new pair w/ my tax refund) and I did try on the Vapor XXXX and compared to my Graf 705's I really didn't care for the fit/feel. It felt more sloppy around the foot than my 10 yr old 705's (length was right on the money). I did happen to fall in love with the fit of the One75's (like a glove) and will most likely be getting those. It's funny b/c before trying anything I was sort of leaning towards the Vapor's and didn't care for the One75/95 series at all, but after trying them both on I got a feel for the different fits and found the One75's to be the one for me.

Nice catch on the spelling. To think I've had the skates since 2001 and made that spelling mistake. I like the looks of the 75 and 95 but I have a skinny heel. My shop didn't have any that would fit me. I found the XXXX's very comfy and can get them for under $500 Canadian which is as good a price as I've seen. I may try them.

I went from 705 cobra to 705 Lite to XXV. I much prefer the depth, mid position of the Litespeed, and comfort of the Bauer boot. I did not like the forward lean of the 705. Only thing about the XXV is that my heel being narrow might be better suited to the One95 or 75 skate so that is what I am going to try next. Also love the toebox of NBH skates

Which is more narrow in the hell and overall, the vapors or the supremes? I had the impression that the supremes are wider than the vapors

edit: I know see that I'm a member+, when did that happen? :P:) , is it something automatic done, or did a mod make me a member+? :)

Someone bitch slap me if I am wrong but the vapors are wider in the heel than the Supreme line.

That was my impression while trying them both on. My heel was floating too much in the Vapor and was perfectly snug in the One75 (when putting them on/taking them off there was actually a "thump" like noise of my heel popping in/out), I'd say the one75 was a slightly narrower fit in the heel than the 705's and the Vapors were a bit wider.

And theWB is correct, the one75 is a similar fit to the one90 if not the identical fit since the one75 is the same skate as the one90 but with the updated heel.

I was in Graf 705's for the past 3 years, and went skate shopping this year. I tried on Vapor XXXX's, U+'s, and Supreme One95's. To me, the Vapors and U+'s were the same...a very stiff boot where I'd have to undo the top two eyelets at least to get any amount of ankle flexion. I tried on the One95's...felt like a glove, and I opted for them. The fit was identical, and I've had no pain or blister issues with the Bauers, and never did with the Grafs either. The One95's are still a bit stiffer in the ankle flexion area than the 705's were, so I unlace the top eyelet, but they're still better than my 705's were fully laced. Best skate I've ever put on my foot. I haven't noticed any difference in forward lean compared with the Grafs. The One95's may be a tad bit laid back towards the heel, but nothing noticeable, which was nice.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I went ahead and sprung for the 40's. Here are my thoughts after a a few skates.

Obviously the 40's are lighter. It is very noticable. Stiffness is the other profound difference. The Bauers seem so responsive and quick. The difference in pitch was not as much (definately noticable) as I was fearing. After a couple skates it feels like being home again, although the vapors don't put you back on your heals as much as I remeber my previous Bauers.

Comfort has to go to my Grafs, but we're talking an 8yr old leather skate compared to a new super stiff one. I like the lower profile toe box comapred to that of the vapor. It seems like there's too much room on top of the front of my foot and my foot is not as "one" with the skate as with the 705's. Don't get me wrong, there is no slippage and the Bauer is not too big, it is just the design of the vapor. I'm sure I'll get used to it. Does the sepreme line have as much volume up front?

Heel lock is not as good as the 705's but it won't be an issue as I have to pay attention to really notice it. By the way my shop guy said the one 95 is definately wider so I'm not sure if that would have been a better choice.

The first time out I felt the tendon gaurd rubbing the back of my calves but that seems to have disappeared. When doing crossovers I feel my toes bunching up in a slightly uncomfortable way but I can't imagine a narrower toe box would be comfortable. While standing both my big and little toes are touching the sides of the box. Not painfully so but to the point where I thought about having it punched out. Other than that skate feels great. By the way it is a 10.5 D. I think they're keepers but wish I had waited to try on some 95's. Sorry about the length of this post. Any thoughts?

Currently skate in Graf 709's and I tried a pair of Vapor XXXX @ LHS and couldn't believe the fit. They were a size 9EE and felt great. I have a high instep and my left foot is larger so did not expect them to fit. I might need a little more toe room on the left skate but that was my only area of discomfort. I'm going back to try them on again but I think my next pair might be custom.

I had switched from 705 to the XXXX's about one year & half ago. It took me couple games to getting use to the pitch. They both are very different skates. But I would choose the XXXX's over the 705 because they fit me better and more of a responsive skates.

Anybody claiming they have a narrow heel and fit great in their Vapors or Supreme's are either in skates and do not fit them or they assumed wrong about their 'narrow' heel.

Danc, you actually are noticing lack of heel lock in your 40's because you're not feeling the difference in pitch. Going from a Graf to a Vapor is a big jump; almost one extreme to the other. The reason you're not feeling much of a difference is because your heels are lifting when you stride.

Another BIG factor to take into account for you is that the heel padding WILL pack in, so despite you not feeling much of a gap in your heel area right now, it will become noticeable over time.

I've skated on these 40's now 3 times and for the first time in a game. Stacey is right. I could definately feel my heel slipping. I really like the skates and how responsive they are and would like to stay with Bauer but I want a proper fitting skate. Do the 40's come in C width or should I try some one 95s. Maybe customs are the way to go. I'm a little disappointed because they felt great in the store. Should they feel tight on initial fitting or be comfortable?

My last pair of Bauers were custom 5000 in the same size. Kept getting blisters where my arch and heel met and eventually some plastic in the heel cup came through the liner. That led me to return them and try the Grafs

I went from 705s in a wide, to XXXXs in a D width and I found that the heel was perfect for me, so moving to a narrower skate from the 705 would seem to make sense.

On the Nike/Bauer website, it appears that XXXX's only come in D-EE widths, while the One95s do come in C width.

I believe you have to go custom if you want XXXXs in C width. I had a pair of XXXXs in a D width. My narrow heel slide around and I ended up with the start of Haglunds.

I thought that a little heel slippage was not such a big deal, till the Haglunds started hurting and I decided to go custom. C width and AA heel made a huge difference for me, although I was incorrectly sized one-up in the uppers by some who "specializes in customs" and is persona non grata around here.
