Stick question..

Recommended Posts

A buddy of mine and I were at a skate-and-shoot. He's been using a 2-piece stick for as long as I've known him. He doesn't exactly have a canon of a slapshot, but it's flat and has decent velocity. He recently purchased an SE6 and was taking it out for the first time. His first few shots were.. well, let's just say "duck" (a poorly thrown football) came to mind. Thinking it was just the transition to an OPS, I suggested experimenting with his lower-hand position. Still, out of about 20 shots, only 1 or 2 were solid and the rest were off-target, fluttery and had nothing on them. I hand him my Mac Daddy and we get them same result. He goes back to his SE6 and more of the same. I hand him my S17 and *BAM*, like night and day, every shot was a laser -- on-target, flat and plenty of pop. Cycling randomly through several shots with each stick, the only stick he could get a solid shot off with was the S17. All of his other shots with the SE6 and Mac Daddy were nothing short of embarrassing while his shots with the S17 were damn near perfect every time.

All 3 sticks were Sakic (Draper) curves and all the same height (within millimeters difference). The SE6 was an 85 flex, while the Mac Daddy and S17 were both 100.

My question: What is different about the S17 that could be causing this huge discrepancy in his shot? I want actual answers, not "The SE6 sucks!" or anything of the sort. It's not the curve. It's not the flex. It's not the stick length. The only thing I can think of, which may be completely off, is the difference in kick point.

Thoughts?

Well you have to remember this........ The S17 is a top of the line stick and the Se6 isnt...... Sorry, im alittle confused

I have no idea why but my slap shot was noticeably harder with the S17

But the S17 IS a mid kick point stick

It actually could be the flex. Warriors are stiffer than rated (easton standard) and that's about a 105 easton. The SE6 is an 85 flex AFTER it is cut down 2 inches (look at the back of the handle). Same with the S17 -- it would be a 100 flex AFTER it is cut 2 inches, making it about an 85 uncut. All easton sticks are like this now, with the flex becoming true to the rating after being cut.

So you're looking at:

MacDaddy: 105

SE6: 75-80

S17: 85

I didn't think the MacDaddy was anything special, I would not pay full price for that stick. The S17 on the other hand, something about it was very nice for me as well. I've been itching to get an 85 Drury ever since I let my 100 flex go, probably will finally bite on a used one here after tax refunds show up.

I would also guess the mid flex had something to do with it, as well as the oval shaped tenon. I have a Fuel Pyro with an oval tenon and I immediately noticed passes were much more on target with it.

I have seen this happen when a friend of mine had just gotten a new ultra carbon about 6 or 7 years ago. His shot went from being good, flat and fairly accurate to a complete flutter puck mis-hit. I believe he was using a woody branches blade with that so that could've been his problem.

In my own experience when a blade loses stiffness it can cause a shot to be horribly inaccurate and sometimes flutter..... but the blade would want to be pretty floppy. Flex could cause what the OP has described but it's something that you should be able to correct and get used to in a short space of time.

As FOD mentioned the materials the stick are made out of is completely different and would not load comparatively. I would've thought that would've just taken power out of the shot though?

tell your friend to get an S9 if he wants cheaper sticks xP....and ye i think its the kickpoint, a macdaddy is a low kickpoint the SE6 should be too...the S17 is a mid kickpoint even though i have a feeling easton says its a lot kickpoint
