Henrik Lundqvist

Recommended Posts

Alright well I got into an argument on another hockey forum over Sean Avery and somehow it lead to Henrik.

I want some honest opinions of Lundqvist as the people who I'm arguing against are I believe to be two devils fans (not taking a run at devils fans but I'm sure you all see the bias) and then its me as a rangers fan. (again there is a bias there as well)

They are claiming that Lundqvist is an average goaltender at best and I am arguing that he is one of the elite goaltenders in the league today. So I want some honest, preferably unbiased, opinions on the matter.

Please anybody chime in on this one.

EDIT: Oh and please don't use Henrik's recent slump as a basis for your argument. Please make an attempt to look at the big picture on this one.

Obviously the guys you're arguing with are just baiting you -- Lundqvist has been a Vezina finalist every year he's spent in the league and he's won an Olympic gold medal. His lateral movement and low coverage are among the very best, but he's got his weaknesses : he's softer up high and his glove isn't great.

Just like that other guy who wore #35 for them a few years back.

As a Ranger fan i believe he is in the top 5 in the league. If Dipetro was actually healthy the NYC area would have 3 of the best goalies in the game but he cannot stay healthy, Marty is marty hes good love him or hate him. Lundqvist is great down low and is the most patient goalie i have ever watched in terms of breakaways and shoot outs. But like other people have said he is weaker up high. Your not a average goalie if you are a Vezina candidate every year either. Along with that Gold medal that he has.

Lundqvist is a world class goalie, unquestionable. Does he have weaknesses? Sure, but they all do. The biggest question I ask is can he win us a Cup. As everyone knows, your goalie HAS to be one of your best players if you're going to have a chance, and I think he is absolutely a Cup goalie. I think his most blaring weakness is his puck handling. Yowza, when he leaves his crease I get the chills. I can't tell you how many times I've seen him wonder out to try and move the puck and something bad happens. Thankfully, a goalie doesn't have to be a good puck handler to be good a goalie. Aside from that, I don't know how many other things really stick out. He's one of those guys that just does lots of things really well.

I think he can and will win us a cup. Staal is just going to get better, Girardi too. Mara has been good all year too. If Redden, Morris and Rozi can be solid D men while there here our D is fine all around and we will be able to win low scoring games often. But our D has been shaky at times this year.

Morris is new so you need to give him a little time to learn a new system from Torts.... I think the idea of putting Roszi and Redden together is not that bad.. it will put more pressure on them to perform at a higher level then they are all ready at also if they were a little more physical in front it would/ could help to =]
