Screwed?

Recommended Posts

Alrighty so i picked up a pair of 5K from my LHS this earlier week.

Went for the first skate this evening and noticed a clicking sound when my wife was walking. So i was thinking she didnt use the laces locks. But when i checked the laces locked were not making the noise.

..........pack up and head home...as always after every use i dry off the skates and air out.

So after inspection i noticed the front screw missing from the holder. Ok no panic yet i have the screw.

Now should i bring them back to my LHS and have them put them back on? or could i just do this my self add some loctite and away we go.

My concerns are how tight should the screws be? Can i tighten them too much? would tightening too much crack or mess up the holder/blade.

I checked all the other screws pretty much all the same. Is this normal or should i tighten? The screws are loose enough that i can take them off with out the aid of any tools.

Please advise thanks in advance

Screws are made to come out, that's why they don't use rivets or something. Put all the screws in, make them hand tight (don't use a socket handle, a normal driver will do) after adding some low strength Loc-tite and you should be fine. Ask your LHS about it if you're overly paranoid.

My CCM skates click on both the rear towers despite the screws being tight, I think the light clicking is just an E-pro holder thing.

CCM/RBK's always seem to be loose from the factory...dont know why. Dont be afraid to tighten it up real good, I always had a flat head and socketed screw drivers and really tightented them as much as I could...never any locktite though, but the blue loctite might be a good idea. Either way, I wouldnt worry too much, I dont think youll be able to tighten the blade enough by hand to worry about adding too much stress to the steel causing it to break upon impact from a puck or such.

I wouldn't hesitate to use BLUE loctite, I know a few skates come with it on from the factory, so the really isn't anything to worry about if you use it yourself.

Color has no bearing on the strength of the Loc-tite, as there are weaker reds and stronger blues (and red stronger than some blacks, etc). Read the tube, go with the lower number, you only need a drop if that. Make sure it says "removable" and shoot for a number below 250.

Ahh, good to know thanks! I've always just operated on the "stay as far away from red as you can if you ever want to get it off" axiom.

Well just got back from a skate with the wife and kid...skate is still making a clicking noise when she walks. Going to hit with blue loc-tite and see what happens in an hour or so.
