Insight on U+ skates... please offer your advice

Recommended Posts

So I have a pair of the 08 model U+ skates. (they are breaking down (peeling and lifting) so I am getting them replaced by my lhs when the new ones come in)

I've developed a problem with the fit of the skate. I have been a size 8 standard D width in skates forever (10.5 shoe/sneaker). So as the skate has really broken in, I'm getting a little bit of lift on my heel when I make fast direction changes. It never happened in the beginning until the skates really loosened up and broke in so I don't think its an issue of the fitting being wrong per say. No matter how tight I tie them it happens (i've been wearing them tighter then I like)

Is there anything anyone can think of to remedy this problem? ? One of my LHS employees recommended that I put a better/thicker tongue and a thicker footbed in the skate and that its a common problem he has heard of because the skate has a greater volume then most other skates. I have no experience doing this in any of my previous skates though. Would that work?

One of my other alternatives is that my shop that is getting me the replacement skates told me that I could go down to a smaller size and that would certainly help the situation and I'm open to that idea but I don't want my toes to be cramped.

Anyone having the same issue or have a recommendation? Please offer your opinions. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

I don't think that a thicker tongue is going to do much for you but if you get a footbed that takes up more room you should be ok. Try using the shock doctor footbeds for hockey. They have a greater volume than the superfeet so it might help a little.

when i got my demo pair, i tried two things. first i heated the skate, pressed the heel in with my hands and then did my heat fit to try and narow the heel up a bit. that worked out very well for me

in another try, i put the skates on and while they were cooling down, another employee pressed the skate around my heel. that worked ok, but the prior method worked better.

Thanks guys.

I actually did a search here and found someone doing a test for fittings called a "pencil test"

Well my skates and my feet failed miserably. The pencil doesnt touch my foot at all, in fact, its about 1/2 inch away from the pencil. I don't know if a thicker tongue can help or compensate for this or if I need a smaller or different skate alltogether.

by the sounds of it the skate is already too deep for you and thats why it is breaking down so fast

the new model of U+ should be better if that is indeed what you are getitng from your LHS

yes i also think the ccm vacu-tack system would help a lil but honestly you need a different skate altogether

something not so deep

but alas that is only MHO
