Points streaks

Recommended Posts

If I understand correctly Gretz has the longest points streak on record of 51 games straight. Think that was in '83. An easy bit of info to find on the web (or in your brain if your a hockey trivia guru).

But who comes after Gretzky in point streak length? Basically I'm lookin for a top ten list or something like that.

Also, does anyone know what are some of the record point streaks for seasons in recent years?

Not a full list...but a start (part way down the page):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Natio...ds_(individual)

Maybe I'm missing it, but I only see Gretz on that page for longest point scoring streak.

Anyways, Mario is second with a 46 game streak in 89/90. I remember Gretz saying once he thought this record could be broken fairly easily one day, haha. I'm not holding my breath.

More disturbing than a 51 game point streak is what Gretzky did during that 51 game streak: 61 goals, 92 assists, 153 points.

Paul Coffey was 2nd in the NHL in points that season with 126, so that streak alone won Gretz the scoring title by almost 30 points. I don't have the game log, but I'm guessing Wayne could have gotten injured 40 or so games into that season and still won the Art Ross. That is completely absurd...imagine someone now going down before the ASG and still winning the scoring race?

I don't know who is 3rd on the list for longest streak, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's either Wayne or Mario.

EDIT: Annnd I was right:

Longest Consecutive Point-Scoring Streak

51 games - Wayne Gretzky, Edm., 1983-84, 61G-92A-153Pts during streak.

46 games - Mario Lemieux, Pit., 1989-90, 39G-64A-103Pts during streak.

39 games - Wayne Gretzky, Edm., 1985-86, 33G-75A-108Pts during streak.

30 games - Wayne Gretzky, Edm., 1982-83, 24G-52A-76Pts during streak.

- Mats Sundin, Que., 1992-93, 21G-25A-46Pts during streak.

28 games - Guy Lafleur, Mon., 1976-77, 19G-42A-61Pts during streak.

- Wayne Gretzky, Edm., 1984-85, 20G-43A-63Pts during streak.

- Mario Lemieux, Pit., 1985-86, 21G-38A-59Pts during streak.

- Paul Coffey, Edm., 1985-86, 16G-39A-55Pts during streak.

- Steve Yzerman, Det., 1988-89, 29G-36A-65Pts during streak.

It's ridiculous how good they were, or maybe it was the league at the time. I've been scanning back through recent years for lengthy streaks by players like Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosby and the longest any of those have is 19 games or something like that.

Gretzky's streak is ridiculous...even compared to the other streaks on that list, it barely makes sense the points he put up during it.

That is an interesting list though, a good bar trivia question would be, 'besides Wayne or Mario, who has the longest NHL points streak?'. I bet you there's not a lot of people that would guess Sundin.

All of his records are ridiculous...its funny to hear someone make the argument that his records are going to be broken. Nothing against the young players today but they can only dream of even getting close to the big Gretzky records.

Yeah I agree. I think its absolutely amazing that he had those two 200+ point seasons. I know he's got ALOT of records (50+?) but a 200+ point season, more than once, really stands out for me.

The 92 goals, 163 assits, and 215 points really stand out to me. The 92 goals could maybe be broken if they change the rules enough (larger nets or goalies having to wear shin pads instead of leg pads etc.) and Ovechkin banks more of his shots. But realistically, 163 assits? 215 points? Just dont see those getting broken.

I knew the Sundin one only because that's always been my favourite player and was my favourite team. I am surprised looking back on it on how few points he had during that streak. Seemed like a lot more back then.

I wonder was there a significant change in rules or otherwise that has caused the decline. Nobody's broken into the top ten in the last 16 years. Or perhaps its just all the gradual rule changes and goaltenders getting better at what they do. Or maybe players just aren't as good anymore.

It's a more defensive game now....but I think the biggest factor is just that Mario and Gretz were absolute freaks. Take them off that list, and Coffey as well because no way in hell he is there without Gretzky, and I'd like to see what the all-time list looks like.

Um, you're going to be really surprised then...Gretzky had FOUR 200 point seasons, and it would have actually been 5 in a row, except in 82/83 he settled for 196.

I think his most unbreakable record is the career assists. Only three players in history have had a 100 assist season, Mario had one, Bobby Orr had one, and Gretz had 11 (in a row). Even if some outrageous player comes along and starts averaging 100 assists a year, he'd have to average that for 20 years to catch Wayne. Not gonna happen in my lifetime.
