NY City hockey stores

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I asked this question a while back but im sure times have changed etc.

Me and the missus are coming to NYC for 5 days in december, shopping.....for hockey kit lol

I wonder what choices do I have if any for hockey stores in NYC. If I remember rightly people said about crosbys near the square garden, is that the only shops? obviously not been from the states I have no idea how far things are away from places. Were looking to stay near central park so walking/subway distance would be great.

does anybody have any suggestions. looking for blades/wheels/shirts/sticks etc etc. Not going to buy skates or armour etc.

Any suggestions or tips whilst in NY would be much appreciated for a tourist

Thanks

Rob

thats cool so there are a few shops. might treat myself to a couple of dolomites hehe

that chelsea pier sounds ok heard a few people mention that before and mentioned the shop down that way. how long would it take to walk the width of manhattan island east to west? just so I can get an idea of the size of the place lol.

anyother shops people can recommend. I thought about getting the stuff delivered to the hotel im staying at but I dont know what shipping etc will be like that close to christmas and I would hate to order something and have to leave before it arrived.

Manhattan is like 2-2.5 miles at it's widest, so it depends on how quickly you walk. I skate at Chelsea, and their pro shop is pretty good. Mostly Bauer stuff, decent prices, good selection.

Manhattan is exactly 2.3 miles at it's widest point (around 4 Km). That walk is a bit long and most people cross town on a bus or in a cab, but the walk would be 30-45 minutes. Wonderland which at the sky rink at pier 61 at chelsea piers.

By the way, non of the shops mentioned thus far- wonderland, westside stick and skate and Paragon. Non of these shops sell Warrior Dolos. Paragon has only middle of the road equipment and isn't a hockey shop. It's a general sports equipment retailer. Westside has a small selection of companies. Mostly Graf, Ballistick, TPS and some eagle gloves. Wonderland has the best selection, but I'm almost positive they don't have anything from warrior.

If you want good equipment you need to go into a borough, Long Island or New Jersey.

If you wern't from England I'd recomend renting a car and check out other parts of New York and Jersey and have a better selection of hockey shops, but since you guys drive on the other side of the road renting a car might not be the safest. But if you can do it, then do it.

When I was in NYC in late '06, I bought some items from Chelsea Piers. Not the best prices (in comparison to the net) but still quite good and I got on quite well with the young bloke that worked there; ie: good service from him and mumbles from the older gent that worked there.

Check it out, but ignore that store at MSG, I got into an argument with the bloke that worked there who was beyond pushy.

Where would the places be in the outer boroughs, nassau, westchester or even close by in New Jersey that would be worth making a trip to? I know I can get practically anything delivered, but there's a lot to be said for being able to see, touch and try on all the stuff at once. So where do I go that's got a wide selection of the top end stuff?

As for shops outside of Manhattan: I'll list the ones I like to frequent. They are all good in different ways. Selection, price, service. Selection and service are my two most important things in a hockey shop since the internet has almost every shop beat in price. Service btw is huge, it's everything from info they can share to how helpful they are and everything in between that relates to how the shop treats you as a customer. Cause if Service sucks you might as well go online. I'm not ranking these, since I know many of the employees/owners use this site and I don't want to offend anyone. If you have a car and day or two with really nothing better to do, you can check these all out for yourself and find what you like and don't like about each one.

Hockey Underground in LI

Sports Plus at Iceland Rink in LI

Shop at Ice Vault in Wayne NJ

Darkstars shop at Ice House in Hackensack NJ

These are the shops I go to and I like. Each for their own specific reason. See if any of them work for you.
