Stick Lie

Recommended Posts

Hi guys maybe its a stupid question, or maybe alot of others have always wondered....I always used a fairly low lie 5.5/5 so the stick was flat when I put my stick out without having to stretch my arm etc, although now I am hearing a 6 lie might be better or even steeper if thats what a 6.5 is called as it will bring the puck closer into my body? what is an easier lie to shoot with and stick handle, is there any rules of thumb or just trying stuff out. I am 6'2

thanks

You should be using the lie that works for you when you're holding your stick normally stickhandling or shooting. If your lie is only flat when stretched out in front of you, you should probably be using something higher.

Remember, if you're wearing your tape down on the toe of the blade, you need to go up, but if you're wearing the tape evenly, the lie is good for you. And of course, if you're wearing the tape at the heel, you need a lower lie.

Now if you do want more blade on the ice when reaching out, that's why a lot of blades have rockers instead of just being flat on the bottom.

just a minor point, but the fact that many blades have rockers nullifies the guidline for the even tape wear - it just can't physically wear evenly when not all parts of the blade are even touching the ice at all times

True, but if you've got the right lie you should be wearing down the center.

I've had Easton Lidstrom, Yzerman, CCM Rechi, and Bauer PM9, P89, P12 and P14, none of them wore anywhere but the heel. I gave up trying to find "my" lie a long time ago.

So what would be up from a 5.5? I have an iginla i think its 5.5, and my heels always wear out.

Easton makes most everything at a 5.5. Bauer though, makes most everything at a 6. Try a lindros.

Shortening your stick a little might also be in order.

If your using a 5.5 and your heel wears out then you should try a 5 or 4.5. Always check for correct stick length first as shortening or lengthening your stick will alter the lie a bit. I use to use a 6 with my heel wearing out and now with a PM9 Malkin 5 the wear is in the middle. Also since not every company's 5 lie is equal to everyone else's, try to bring your current stick with you and compare it to others to make sure your getting the correct lie for you.

Thanks, i wasnt sure if i should try a 6-6.5 or a 4.5-5. Im going to take a look at the malkin, i tried a Gagne and had no rea problems, minor heel wear but i think another .5 and id be perfect.

I'd add if your current stick lie works well for you in terms of shooting and stickhandling, you might not need to change. I shoot more upright and stickhandle a little lower, so I like a higher lie with some rocker to it. There's always more wear at the heel, but using lower lie sticks my aim is off when I cup the puck (because turning the blade over makes the lie seem lower).
