NightStalker62 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2009 i'm joining an intermediate ice hockey league (non-checking) and i'm in the process of buying pads. i'm about 5'9" and weigh 135 pounds. i have looked at various sizing charts and have even tried on pads and i'm still unsure of what is best for me so i thought i'd ask a couple questions and get some advice to make sure i'm getting the right sizes.1) should there be any gaps between gloves and elbow pads, elbow pads and shoulder pads, and shoulder pads and the top of hockey pants?2) for shin pads, where should the bottom of them end? at the top of the tongue of the skates or a couple inches lower? If you're playing non-check, you might be able to get away with a little gap, but don't cheat too much. The problem is that some of us like smaller gloves. The solution to that problem is to get some kind of wrist guard. The length of the shin pads depends on whether you pull your shinpads over your skate tongues or if you tuck your shinpads underneath your tongues. If you tuck them underneath your skate tongues, you need longer shinpads. The shinpads definitely need to be longer than the top of the tongue. You don't want to go without protection there since shots are generally low. I would say the bottom of the shinpads should end at least below the first eyelet. Not sure about the other stuff. Hope that helps.
ndlancer95 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2009 There should be at most a half inch glove elbow gap. The shoulderpads should slightly overlap the elbow pads, but i'm not sure about the pant, shoulder gap
JP1989 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2009 I'm not really sure about the gap between equipments, but if you get everything for your size, it should be fine. For sizing (in extension, up to where the pads should go), I go to Hockey Giant's web site. I didn't buy anything from there yet, but I'm looking now and then in the sizing chart they're providing for every equipment. ie. that's what they say for shin guards : "Measurements for Shin Guards – Select your height from the chart below with the corresponding shin measurement. The measurement is taken from the middle of the knee to the top of your skate eyelets." And then you can measure your shin and look for your size in the provided Sizing guide. Its very useful. If you have the pad outside the tongue, you need a longer pad.
Andoy 5 Report post Posted July 9, 2009 Try to minimize the gaps as much as you can but at the same time make sure that the equipment fits properly. Did you just start hockey? You don't necessarily need to spend on high end gear, I would probably recommend getting a decent pair of pants though with good hip/tailbone protection! NightStalker62 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2009 thanks for the replies guys. i did buy elbow pads, gloves and shoulder pads and there is about 1-2 inches of a gap between the shoulder and elbow and elbow to glove. i bought the ccm vector 04 pads and for their sizing it says to measure under the arms and senior small should have a measurement of 34-38 (i measured around 35-36) but for the height it states 5 ft to 5 ft 7 in. but i'm taller than that. i got the same size for elbow pads and 14 for gloves, which are the only pads that i'm sure are perfect for me. this is why i'm a little unsure of if i should go to senior medium or stick with the smalls for the shoulder and elbow pads. i'm going back to the LHS so try on mediums again and make sure once and for all what will be better for me. There are some LHS' out there that don't have knowledgable staff. Besides, there are alot of guys here that know their stuff.
