Red Wings 2009-10 thread

Recommended Posts

What's killing me about the Wings right now, is they seem to go into a 2nd period shell for about 5-10 minutes EVERY game where the other team just gets bunches of quality scoring chances, odd man breaks and ultimately goals. In the opener against St Louis, they gave up 3 goals in a 5-10 minute span. Then the next night, after taking a 3-2 lead, they gave up 2 goals 15 seconds apart. Same thing happened the other day against Buffalo. Even last night, after they went up 2-1 in the 2nd, they stopped playing for about 5 minutes in which LA had at least 4 or 5 great chances (but didn't score). It's very un-redwing like. I'm not sure if it's just a hangover from two straight years of short offseasons... but they need to find a way to get over their mid-game lulls, otherwise they'll be lucky to make the playoffs.

Oh, and they need to figure out something to do with Jimmy Howard... kid has a 5-hole you could drive a mack truck through. And after Ozzies self described lack of drive after the '08 cup, he needs a backup that is going to push him and fuel his competitive side.

As if he needed one more reason for instant HOF induction.

Didn't they say they were stopping that practice after Wayne?

Okat maybe not 'instant' but 'first ballot unanimous as soon as they can get him in' induction!

Yea I think the decision to stop letting people do that was mostly damage control over doing that for Mario and fearing he could come back...which turned out to be true.

And yes, I think Lidstrom is absolutely first ballot, I can't think of four players who could retire at the same time he does and edge him out.

I usually don't like criticizing officiating, but the tying goal was pathetic. Phoenix shoved osgood into the net, with the puck, and the men in stripes let it stand. Horrible.

There were a few times when Osgood got shoved in the net. If the puck is under the leg pads the play should be stopped, it looked like they were digging for gold a few times.

i agree - ive had that happen a few times when i was playing goalie and it is really frustrating - how are you supposed to make the save when all they have to do is push you into the net? the players all know that it is kind of a loophole and that they can take advantage of it.

The only thing you can do is stick one of your legs out behind you, back into the net, so that when they ram you, your back leg pushes the net off first; you can also try to get an arm on the post, but that tends to be more difficult in those situations.

There is no way in hell that goal should have counted. Not only should it have been caled back on the 'pushing the goalie into the net with the puck' rule, but referees have developed a very odd and not very reliable standard of blowing plays based on the body language of the goalie. Some guys always look like they're in control, and they always get quick whistles; anyone who looks even a little doubtful has to wait at least an extra steamboat before the play gets blown, and that's plenty of time to start shovelling.

I think that the refs just wait to see if the goalie stops moving - and if the goalie does stop moving they just assume the puck must be in him and blow the whistle. Some goalies realize that and use it to their advantage.. some don't

I may be the only wings fan that thinks they made the right call on the second Phoenix goal. I watched the game last night, and while I first I thought Ozzie was pushed, the replays seemed to show that he never had control of the puck or had it covered. It looked like it was resting against his left pad, uncovered and the ref was in a great position to see the loose puck. Also, it appeared to me that Prucha was playing the puck the entire time, and not trying to push Ozzie into the net. I think most of the force pushing Ozzie came from the wings crashing into Prucha.

Regardless, Prucha should have never had a swipe at the puck... it was a defensive breakdown that let Prucha be open in the first place. Datsyuk was floating too high in the slot... I think he was trying to cover a pass back to a defenseman crashing into the high slot. Problem was, there was no defenseman back there. Phoenix had 4 guys crashing in and the 5th was tight to the boards at the blue line on the play side. Datsyuk should have been lower in the slot tying up Prucha... instead he was floating on an island leaving Prucha all alone on the backdoor.

it looked to me that the puck was stopped under Ozzies left pad. Vrbata and Prucha kept digging at it. Prucha slid his stick under Osgood to knock it in.

I made a comment early in the game how the refs need to stop letting guys hack, poke and dig like they do.

yea, after watching it again, the puck was never frozen. I still dont see how 3 coyotes shoving a goaltender is ssomehow acceptable though.

Another wonderful show put on by the red wings last night...Why can't we start out on a decent foot!!!

And to top off the loss Filpula is out for 4-6 weeks with a broken wrist...

that was incredible. they didn't even say it was intent to blow the whistle. they thought auld had covered/caught/saved the puck, but it was already in the net when the whistle blew. apparently this is not reviewable. ridiculous. i'm so sick of referees being out of position to make the right call on a play.

agreed, I'm a casual wings fan and I gotta say they got screwed last night, but then again, if it was zetterburg shooting the puck, don't you think that it would have been called a goal? Fourth line crashers get the early whistle all the time.

of course there was no whistle, but I bet the ref just didn't want anyone biting, fish-hooking, punching and gouging anyone in front of the net.

except for May was 10 feet away shooting on the backhand and no Wing was near the net to crash, poke, etc anything. The ref flat out screwed up. He can't use the BS excuse of had intent to blow the whistle because it was almost 3 seconds after the shot went off and the puck was lodged in the side of the net. He lost had no idea it was a goal until after he waved it off, then it was to late.

Here is a link to the NHL's excuse for waving off Detroits goal against Dallas

What an explanation

It sure seams to me like he is defending the refs call for the beginning of the article and then turning around to say they blew it at the end.

Wow. Nice goal to beat the ducks in OT. No one on him, I understand, but that was a beautiful goal glove side with not too much space.
