would add ocean Ice palace to the "GO" on that list, too.....

Also Alex B, who was at Rock Ice in dunellen's pro shop was real good, but the shop is closed now, and I'm not sure where he ended up??

Bruce at hockey Haus in Bound brook is without a doubt the best around, and cheapest to boot!

I take my skates to national sports, but I think it's not really the store but rather the person who does your skates.

I've had both good and bad sharpens at the same store so I think it's critical that you develop a good relation with the person that does your skates well. Just my 2 cents

For the most part I believe that's the case. However, you're going to get places where everybody knows their craft and places where it's the blind leading the blind.

If you find somebody who does your skates well, keep going back to that sharpener.

In Vancouver. I'm no expert but I'll give it a shot. I've had my skates sharpened at The Hockey Shop and Cyclone Taylor Sports (Coquitlam) and have no complaints. Still not a fan of the service at CTS though. I would assume No to Sport Chek, Sport Mart, Canadian Tire, etc.

Never go to Dick's sporting goods. I was in a pinch one time and they said they could sharpen skates. I took them in and they didn't put a hollow on at all. What they did was try to chamfer the outside edges and they really didn't even do that. All they suceeded in doing was scratching the hell out of the steel.

I go to Center Ice in Fort wayne indiana. They are an awsome hockey shop for all things hockey. they only charge 5 bucks to sharpen hockey skates.

Any sharpening recommendations in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area? Lots to choose from, for sure. Who among them have the best reputations? I see all the Flyers Skate Zone locations are 'Maximum Edge' shops. They all the same?

Thanks.

For those on long island I go to amity harbor sports and have mine done by Frank he always does a great job

On Long Island they are ok.

Best on LI - Mike at Sports Plus and Stan's son at the Rinx.

Can also try - Iceland Proshop and Dante or Andrew Cozzi - NOT Mrs. Cozzi.

Do NOT to Whealling Willie's, Play it Again (either locations sucks)

Not a fan of the bathtub at Hockey Underground and I haven't tried the hand sharpener yet.

In SE Michigan, I would say the Playmaker Pro Shop inside the Ice Box in Brownstone is by far the best, I know a lot of people here are real high on the place in Orchard Lake but Brownstone is a lot closer if you're south of Detroit like I am. He used to have a shop in the rink in Wyandotte and one in downtown Wyandotte but I think the pro shop is it right now. I've never had a problem.

In the Grand Rapids area, the Play It Again Sports on 28th used to be pretty good (I actually worked there in 2008-09), but the store has since been sold and I don't know how their sharpening services have been affected.

Greater Vancouver(BC, Canada) area:

Don't go:

Sport Mart, Sport Chek: Inconsistent sharpenings. For those that aren't specific with the hollow they get their skates done at then this is a good place to go but it's hit and miss. I believe it's cheap to get your skates done there too. Although one time, I asked for a 5/8 hollow and the guy actually gave it to me! Then another time I went my edges weren't level!

Do go:

The Hockey Shop: Yeah these guys are in located in Surrey but they do a good job of sharpening and they actually give you the hollow that you want if you ask them. Also do FBV sharpening. Cost: $6 for standard, $10 for FBV. I bought an unlimited sharpening pass that runs from May 2010 to March 2011 for 49.99 which is a great deal. Unlimited FBV is 99.99 which is also a steal.

Cyclone Taylor: They have knowledgable staff and managment and a lot of my friends swear by them. The only thing is that if you're specific with your hollow, they may or may not give it to you. I've sharpened my skates there a handful of times asking for a 5/8 hollow and they gave me something really deep on all occasions (It didn't matter whether or not the store was dead or not). Is it TOO much to ask? I recommend going to the Coquitlam store. I believe the last time I went there it was $5 for a sharpening.

Raleigh:

Good: Five Hole Sports, Cool Sports

Both Locations listed have knowledgeable staff and owners. I continuously go out of my way to stop by these two locations when I ever go to Raleigh.

Sharpenings in Charlotte are really hit or miss at the Ice House Pineville location. I still have to try the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail.
