Getting your shots through from the point

Recommended Posts

Actually, in general "ask your goalie" is a good idea. A lot of them have very strong opinions on where you should be and what you should do.

That's good advice.

i know the feeling, my biggest problem no is when i get an open shot....i get excited and rip it too high....lol

I know how that goes...I usually peg a couple players up high each game <_<

a lot of it just takes practice. but another thing you could do is use the technique that the pros use, where they rip a slap shot and miss the net on purpose so that it hits the boards and takes a crazy bounce right to the front of the net.

You have to really learn the boards in the rink to pull that off. I used to do that at the Zamboni door on the one rink here, it would always kick out right to the slot if you hit it just right.

I also like to fire pucks into the bodies in front of the net looking for a deflection.

at one of the rinks I use to play at, There was this small piece of the boards that would stick out and if you rung it around in a certain it would shoot out right to the front

The boards behind the net on the two surfaces we use for league play are pretty lively. I've gotten pretty good at sending a shot from the wall out by the blue line behind the net at an angle where it comes out maybe 6" or a foot off the other post. The goalie never has a chance, the only downside is for some reason the forwards don't anticipate it well. When they do it's an easy goal. B)

Got another assist last night (on the game winner, late in the third). Puck cycled around to me at the right point, two guys come charging after me (center and LW). I took two quick backwards strides (right handed shot) to change the angle and put a quick wrister towards the net, my right wing tipped it perfectly past the goalie. He apologized for tipping it, which I thought was hilarious -- I was hoping for a tip, the goalie had all kinds of time to play the angle on me.

I have to second (or third or fourth) the point about lateral movement. Practice moving as you receive the puck and getting the shot off on the move. Watch some high level hockey and the good point men rarely get a pass standing still and get a shot off. I probably run drills to work on this with my defensemen every single practice. There are a million ways to set it up. Just get a buddy to feed you pucks at sticktime and move back and forth catching the pass and getting the shot off quickly. Get your feet moving before the puck arrives BTW.

I had one last night coming in on a break away I missed low on the glove side from about the hash marks bounced it off the boards the puck bounced out the other side just off the post and I put it in. Basically passed it to myself from one side to the other. Wish I had it on tape. Popped the water bottle and everything. Pissed the goalie right off!
