Building up arch of skate

Recommended Posts

Looking for ideas from some of the skate techs around here on how to build up the arches of my skates.... I currently use orthotics and they work well but they take up some depth of my skates and with my deep instep I need as much space as I can get to make sure I have enough wrap. Skates are custom X:60's with high vamping and they feel good but I'd like a little more wrap through the arch and forefoot and removing the orthotics gives me the space I'd like but I need something for the arch support because of my high collapsing arch. Any ideas someone can give me would be awesome

i've used layers of moleskin stuck to the bottom of the very thin insole to do just that. worked pretty well. will probably have to make few adjustments before you get it right.

Graf heat moldable insoles. Those orthotic take up less space than the pre-molded foot beds.

Do you know how these compare to customs as far as stiffness/ quality?

After years of foot issues I finally damaged the tendon on the bottom of my foot and had to get a cortizone shot. The upside is the doctor made casts of my feet and I got these orthotics. The bad thing is there is no chance in hell they will fit into either my tacks or my grafs. Its not even really a depth issue as a width issue. Even with boots completely unlaced they are not going in. I damn near dislocated my thumb trying to force them in. Tried to put them in graf g35s and last model pro tacks.

So my question is should I try to do the grafs footbeds in my existing skates?

Should I go back to the doc and see if insurance will cover a second set and try to get some made for my skates,( I wonder how this will work if I change boots)?

Should I look into boots that will accomodate this orthotic?

Foot= narrow heel, zero arch, moderate to high volume, slightly wide toes. pretty heavy pronation. Now when I skate with out the orthotic I am constantly aware of it do to pain in the feet.

My question with the grafs is when they heat up and I stand on them wouldnt that just flatten them out which is what I am trying to avoid? The whole purpose of the orthotic I thought was to give my foot an arch and stop if from flattening out?

A local shop guy recommended the graf footbeds also, but then he said the tacks were not the right skate and I should get a vector 07 or 09 with the footbeds cause they had no arch. The Tacks look the same I thought as to lack of arch, but didnt want to start an argument with the shop guy.

The footbeds are very stiff and they'll retain their shape for as long as you have them IMO

They'll have to grind the edges off to fit your skate. I'll post a picture of mine later on.

Here are a couple pics of the ones I kept in my Vapor XXXX's

You'll have the same in the Ultra series Graf skates (comes with skate purchase)

Actually stopped by the podiatrist office today. Insurance only covers one pair a year.

The funny thing is though I can get a new pair after jan 1st even though I just got a pair as it will be considered last year. I set an appointment for the 5th and will be bringing in my grafs probablly to have a pair made. My g35s did not come with those inserts though.
