Washing Gear (Win and the Dishwasher)

Recommended Posts

Usually I just spray with febreze sport and hang to dry on a stand made of PVC pipe. Elbows and shins smell a bit, but otherwise no smell in any of my gear.

I might stick my elbows and shin liners in the wash soon. I cant imagine them having issues. Gloves? Hells no.

To add to this, why do they put the hook side of the velcro on the removable liners in shinpads? Makes it stick to everything else in the wash!

Because the hooks could wear through the liner and irritate your skin?

I use a mesh bag for all velcro items I throw in the wash.

I can't find any with lanolin, what gels do people use?

These aren't gels, but I know of two foams you can look for:

The Blue/Yellow/White can Barbasol has Lanolin in it. Also, Noxzema Medicated with Aloe and Lanolin (Green can).

I suppose... I can't imagine that actually happening though.

Good call on the mesh bag, I do have a hockey laundry bag I can use.

I just tried the mesh bag idea. The shin liners still stick to it, but since its mesh and not fabric, it pulls away without getting anything in the hooks.

I also washed/dried my elbow pads with zero issues (and theyre back to being white again!!). Will definitely continue doing that :) Almost tempted to try my shoulders....

I don't know what the big deal is with washing gear. If you are doing it properly, you shouldn't have any issues. At the end of each season, I throw all of my gear in a giant industrial front load washer at the local laundry mat (bag included). Then I let the stuff air dry. Only things I don't throw in are my helmet and my skates.

During the season i dry all of my gear out immediately after playing in the utility closet (where the water heater and furnace are located) The stuff is dry in just a few short hours since the air has almost no humidity and is warm.

My gear has almost no smell. My wife has never complained about my equipment smelling. . . . and she works at a local hockey store where they clean equipment, so she knows how hockey equipment can smell.

Question for Eqpt managers, when doing team loads of laundry for under garments, socks and jerseys? Do you use mesh bags for each player? What detergents do you use? Do you dry the nylon?
