Kevlar Sock

Recommended Posts

I'll be interested to see some actual photos and info once someone tries them out.

There website is godawful to navigate and doesn't have much useful info on it. That stupid flash movie is useless and annoying.

If I'm the first to get them, then I'll post some pics and my impressions of them.

Just noticing that the site has been completely re-done. The skate socks aren't yellow on their page anymore. I'm really hoping I don't get the yellow ones because I ordered them so early. I did select "black" though.

Update.

Just got mine in the mail. They are well made and stretchy. The yellow kevlar part doesn't feel any different than the non-kevlar parts.

Just one problem: They sent me the wrong colour. I ordered black and they sent me white. I emailed them to find out how I can exchange them. So I won't get a chance to try them out just yet.

Anyone seen the HexArmor stuff? They look very very impressive.

It'd be sweet if they made some socks with that material.

Seems bulky enough, and not stretching, the hockey socks could be made from that material. For skates socks it's not acceptable, IMO.

Got a fast reply from Tactics. They are taking care of me.

On the product - quality is excellent. They are soft and stretchy. The foot part is well ventilated. It goes high to just under the knee. I won't be on the ice before Sunday so I can't comment on how the feel after a good skate yet. I don't anticipate they will feel any different than other skate socks.

How thin?

Compared to the Vapor socks, they are about the same. But they are a lot softer than the Vapors and more comfortable.

Still waiting for mine, it's been 3 weeks.

Be patient. It will be worth the wait. They are a small company and were just overwhelmed with the sudden demand. Customer service is really good.

Got a chance to try out the Tactics skate socks tonight. VERY comfortable. The foot part is nice and thin so the skates feel like they should. The only question I have is on durability, but I guess we'll have to wait to see how that goes.

Skarbro, did you end up getting the small socks? I'm in the exactly same boat being a size 9 US. Tonight we watched as our goalie had to be taken away in an ambulance from a deep gash to the leg. So now I'm considering the socks.

Ouch! I hope he is ok.

Yeah I got the small and they fit perfectly. I had asked them and they said the only reason to go a size bigger is if you have fat legs.

I have been out a few times now. Most comfortable skate socks I ever had. I like how they go really high near the knee. They don't move during a game.

I got my socks! Unfortunately I'm out of game till this summer at least, and won't be able to check performance . But I did few pictures. All stuff seems made very qualitative and reliable.

I just found another company with a similar product, but not made of Kevlar.

http://www.tuffnlitehockey.com/

They are supposed to protect like the kevlar socks, but not breakdown in the wash. Also it looks like cotton (i.e. white).

I splurged and ordered some.

The testing section of the site was interesting:

Sock Testing

The funny part is that this guy is "Albert" from the Philadelphia Cream Cheese commercials.

Those look good. But what are they made of? And kevlar breaks down in the wash?

I am very interested in how they are. I've already had a small durability issue with a non-kevlar part ot the other brand.

Which version did you order?

Skarbro, I looked into what they are made of...

http://www.tuffnlite.com/

"Tuff-n-Lite® has a core fiber that’s combined with strands of other fibers -- UHMWPE, glass and stainless steel -- to add characteristics like strength, abrasion resistance, heat resistance and softness. "

This site also sells shirts, etc. made of this stuff for police, extreme sports, bikers and industrial safety clothing.

UHMWPE is an extremely long chain polymer. If you feel a bit nerdy ;) or just interested check out the link below.

Thanks. I'm giving the Tuff N Lite socks a try. I ordered the Pro Thin Feet as well after contacting them. They responded back to my question in 5 minutes! The website needs a lot of work and the videos are really amateurish - but I like that they actually demonstrate in one video how resistant the material is with a box cutter!

PROs I'm looking for with Tuff N Lite over the other sock mentioned in this thread:

- I like that it appears to be the ENTIRE sock. The other product is only the yellow part of the sock and is missing protection at the very top. This will also hopefully translate into durability in the feet. I had an issue with the other product.

- The heat-drawing properties look interesting. I'm curious how it feels.

- The chirp factor. White socks stand out a lot less than yellow socks.

These are also a tad cheaper when you factor in shipping.

I don't think the entire sock is made of this material. I clicked on the picture of the sock in the "buy it now" screen and it gave the following description:

"Three Sizes: Small, Medium, Large

Small: 4-6 with 11 inches of cut resistance

Medium: 7-9 with 15 inches of cut resistance

Large: 10-13 with 15 inches of cut resistance"

Yeah I saw that too after ordering. I wonder if that 15" goes all the way to the top? I will email them.

Wow their service is good. I already got a reply. I asked about the medium socks:

The Med is actually 13 inches high of cut resistance.

The cut resistance material goes from below your ankle so you are protected in your skate from about the third lace hole up, to the top of the sock. The foot is not cut resistant.

The Tuff N Lite sales rep has been really good. He reiterated a warning not to wash the socks with velcro as it will lock up tightly. It won't affect the performance but it will be a pain to remove.
