AHL Players play sledge hockey

Here's a vid by my colleague Barry Gray showing the Hamilton Bulldogs tyring out sledgehockey at a Hamilton arena where funding efforts have allowed for renovations to allow the sledge hockey teams that play there better access to the ice and game. The Bulldogs part is near the end but it is interesting to hear the player describe the game. I have played against this goalie and she is hard to beat. Once at a shinny there were a bunch of guys who were unloading slapshots from just inside the blue line at her and she stopped everyone of them. Nasty up close too as she is aggressive with her sled and stick.

I've played sledge hockey once for a fundraiser a few years back. It's damn tiring. And, I've seen a little of it on TV...they don't hold back...some of the collisions with those sleds are pretty hard.

One player also pointed out to me that when they hit into the boards it's down at the bottom where there is absolutely no give as opposed to glass.

Terrific once again, jds - I really look forward to these.

Just to give credit where credit is due, this vid was shot by a colleague of mine. I just posted the link.

why do they have skates on

All the same protective equipment is worn from what I understand, the holders are just removed for the actual players. Feet need protection, the Bulldogs were also skating around and it looked like just a few jumped on sleds.

Man, the upper bodies on some of those players must be really strong! I can't image having to use my arms for both mobility and stick handling / shooting for an entire game. I agree, it would be great to try the sport.
