Looking for a New Shoulder Pad

Recommended Posts

I've been lurking around the other threads on shoulder pads but it's time to ask some more direct questions of the community...

What I have and like: I have Easton Synergy 900s. The velcro is shot... it's time for a change.

What I want: A shoulder pad with low profile shoulder caps. Protective, flexible, etc.. I'm a very thick, broad guy.. 5'10" 230lbs.

What I have tried so far:

Easton ST 16 2020 - size large - doesn't come down far enugh to belly... I hate the new cut.

Easton S17 2009 - shoulder too high at clavicle

Farrell H600 - size large - bicep/arm protectors too short. Too short at waist. Tight. I'm consdiering an XL. Also, caps were HUGE!

Bauer - all of them!!! - fit and feel great but the shoulder caps are nit low profile. I look like a tanker truck!!

RBK 10K - fit and feel great but the problem is the shoulder caps again. Not low profile.

I'm trying on the CCM's later this week.

I am SO open to suggestions!!!

You seem to be running into a common problem with others. The high-end pads that are super protective are not going to be low-profile. Try mid-ranged stuff, or if you're seriously concerned about the looks of a lower-profile pad, Sherwood 5030s are a good choice.

I don't need superprotective but the 5030's aren't enough. This is a frustrating thing!

What kind of hockey do you play? hitting, non hitting?

You be looking for something like these: http://www.hockeymonkey.com/nike-bauer-hoc...efender-sr.html

Its not hitting but there is, of course plenty of contact and can get physical. No hitting doesn't really mean no hitting.. especially along the boards and in front of the net. Plus... I'm getting older and would rather not get hurt. I don't need top of the line but I need some reasonable protecton. I haven't tried on the defender's yet but there doesn't seem like there is alot to them. I'll add them to my "try on" list.

Try stepping down the the Reebok 6k shouldies. I have them and have been happy with them. Not bulky and they protect well against the contact of the no-check league.

Given that you didn't like the Farrells/bauer, I doubt you will like the defenders. The defenders are as short as the farrells, though the biceps are substantially longer and more protective. Also the caps are quite thick due to the foam covering, thicker than other bauers.

The ccm v10's are very low profile pads, they have a rolled shoulder pad set rather than a big obtrusive cap like a lot of high end pads have.

Yeah... those are now top on my list to try on.. I had on a pair once and they were a bit tight (my largish gut and chest getting in the way) but I'm not sure if they were a L or an XL. If they were the L then the XL will be perfect and I'm set. If not maybe its time to lose some damned weight!!! Hoping to try them on soon!!
