Holding other players stick down with yours?

Recommended Posts

IIRC when the rule changes/emphasis came in (2007-8 maybe?) there was a USAH "situations" video that basically said in regards to both lifting the stick, and holding it down, that it was fine if they were actively preventing you playing the puck (i.e. puck was either being shot/passed towards you or you had possession/were fighting for the puck) then there was no penalty. If they're not immediately denying you playing the puck, then it's an interference penalty.

Calls seem to have slacked off a bit in that regard, but that's still how I play it and how I would call it if I were a ref, absent explicit instructions to the contrary from my refs' organization.

It's still supposed to be that way officially.

Heh... No. I do that all the time and I can beat just about anybody with foot speed. I have caught up to guys on breakaways and used that kind of stick check to keep them from getting a shot off.

Yes, it tends to piss them off. No, I'm not going to stop doing it.

I will say though that I was called for it once, ref called it slashing, and it was no more then what the OP was describing. So be aware there is a gray area where a ref might decide to call it.

Yep. I'm with you on that one. As a D guy I do this to people camping out in front on the net from time to time. Sometimes I'll just lift the stick, and sometimes I'll hold it down with mine so they can't get a shot off. The latter is very frustrating for some people.

Yep, an "aggressively applied" stick press might be considered a slash. The stick press and stick contact in general is allowed on the bottom third of the stick. You are not permitted to "slash" the stick and if it is done in a vicious or intimidating matter we can issue a penalty for slashing. I can remember seeing dozens OPS broken in the bottom third of the shaft in U18 AAA games in the early days of the OPS.... They didn't change ther style when they came out, the sticks just couldn't take it. But seeing these stick break these days you should understand why you will get the occasional slash call.

Another somewaht related stockwork question.....

Playing Left Wing and I'm about 5 feet in front of the crease and my center is in the far corner sliding to the center boards..... I have my stick down with the hopes of getting a centering pass when i see my center circle back to the corner, just as I'm about to start cycling with him.... I feel this massive chop come down about 1 foot lower than my right hand (I'm a righty)

Now it's obvious that there was no centering pass coming my way, and that this was just an overly aggressive Defensemen trying to move me out of there,,,, which I would certainly expect, but this type of chop, is it considered a slash even though it only came close to my hands but did not hit them? And when i say hard it felt like he swung a sledhammer down on me. I am surprised my Junior ONE95 OPS didn't crack in half....

The short answer is yes, and it's HELL YES if he hits it hard enough to know it out of your hands!
