New skates, now or april?

Recommended Posts

I have been away from the game for about 10 years. I am going to play some open ice hockey and get into an adult hockey league soon. I need skates. I am a rather large man. 6'1" and a slim 255 (no such thing). I used to weigh 185, but got married and had kids. I have some questions that I really need answered.

With my weight, do I need a top of the line, stiff skate or would I be ok with a mid level (ie. CCM U+ 07 or SE 6) skate?

I have a wide forefoot and average heel and mid foot. Looks like a V. I have tried the bauer vapors, too narrow, the CCM U+ 07 and they seem to fit well and the Easton stealth (tight), synergy (comfortable) all in wide sizes. The problem is that I am having a hard time finding my size (9.5 W or 9 W). I want to try some Bauer One75's but I can't find any to try on. Do the One75's fit like the CCM's, wider? Should I wait until the new line comes out for Easton and Bauer or go for a pair of skates now?

Bauer's Supreme line should run wider than Vapors, but not as wide as CCMs. At least that's what I gather.

My feet sound pretty similar to yours. I'm also a big guy and a hard/powerful skater.

CCM's fit my feet very well. If you can find a good deal on the right size, I'd see if you can find a high or top end model skate that's a year or two old. I've had awesome luck on ebay finding new Vector 10.0's for around/under 200 bucks. They have held up very well for me so far, and have fit my feet quite well. The E width is great. First pain-free skates I've had in a long time withough getting customs.

To answer your question "now or April?", do what I have done.

Buy some one95's now and then buy some TotalOne's in April.

Sure, it's completely financially irresponsible but it is oh-so-fun!

I don't think you will need to go top end, you should be fine with a mid level skate. It seems some of the midlevel skates have better durability a lot of the time, it makes sense as it's a better selling point to offer it as say a 5 year skate, whereas the top end stuff is probably a 2 year skate, if you know what I'm saying. I may be way off base here but thats the trend I've noticed.
