Can A Skate Be Too Good

Recommended Posts

I consider myself a decent and approaching good skater. Can a player be wearing skates that are too good for them? I use One95's and Mission AGX's (They are 1/4 to 1/2 size to big and give me nasty lace bite) and feel kind of goofy sometimes in my One95's. However in my Mission's, take away the pain, I feel more agile.

Are newer players better off staying away from the top end skates until their skating improves?

Side Note: I'm sending my Mission's out today to George's Hockey Repair to put a new tongue on them to help w/ the lace bite & hopefully the size issue.

I think so. It's possible to have too stiff of a boot.

Also, how much do you weigh? Heavier people could benefit from a stiffer boot.

I only weigh 160lbs and it took me quite awhile to break in my vapor XXXXs. vapor XXVs probably would have been plenty of skate for me.

The stiffness of a top-end skate can sometimes be too much for a beginner skater to handle. One thing to consider in your mention of 'goofiness' is the size of the runner. If the Bauer skate has a longer runner, you will feel less agile compared to the shorter steel on the Missions. However, this is all a guess as I don't know the size of your skates.

I switched the runner to the 2.0 b/c I could use the 2.1. However, this is more of a general question for beginner skaters and not just a personal question.

Thanks for the replies.

AGX is a lower cut than the Bauer and much less stiff. You may just prefer the lower cut and less stiff boot, I do.

I was under the impression that a player who is not Very skilled will not get the benifits from a high end skate.....I also read that a plyer who does not weigh over 180lbs cant get the benifits of a high end skate?

Am I wrong?
