Asking the skate fitting gurus for help.

Recommended Posts

I've been having serious trouble finding the skate type that best fits my foot type. I've tried numerous things with no luck, so I'm hoping the skate guru's here on MSH can give me some advice.

Here's what I have tried:

S15 - Fit well in the heel, felt a bit wide in the mid and forefoot. Gave me severe lace bite at the second eyelet from the top.

One 95 - Fit well in the heel, felt a bit sloppy in the forefoot. Also gave me severe lace bite at the second eyelet from the top. Passes the pencil test. When I would skip that second eyelet the skate began to feel extremely sloppy, particularly around my forefoot. My heel also wouldn't lock in and the skate became less than responsive.

Vapor XX (from 2004) - Is more comfortable than the other two, but clearly doesn't have enough volume. Fails the pencil test significantly.

I'm going to by new skates and I would love to know what I should be looking at. I don't have a decent LHS within less than a 90 minute drive from me so I'm hoping to get a list of suggestions from people on here and make sure the store has them in stock before I take the trip out there. One more note - I have tried on the G35 and they felt pretty good, but all those other skates felt good when I initially tried them on and they ended up being wrong so I'm a bit gun shy.

Now for the foot pics.

Thanks again for the advice.

If the G35 worked, possibly the new Vapor will as well. Bit concerned about the top of foot/ankle - do you lace up all the way? Might have to go custom to get around that if that is the case.

Lacing all the way depends on the height of the boot. I would probably lace the G35 all the way, but with the Vapor would probably not lace to the top eyelet.

I'll definitely check out the Vapor and the U+, thanks.

I did at first, but the lace bite issues I had with the second eyelet from the top made it impossible to lace that eyelet so I couldn't just leave the top eyelet unlaced either. I ended up skipping the second eyelet and using the top eyelet.

EDIT: I've always been told I have a "Supreme" foot shape. Given the feedback I've been getting I'm guessing this is incorrect?

I'm not as much of a skate expert as JR (who is?), but I've gone through quite a few pair of skates, at least one from every brand, sans Easton. Here's my two cents, I don't think that's awful advice, it's just that you have a really unique foot. You're feet are basically flat, really high volume, semi wide heel (though not wide ankles), and semi wide mid-forefoot. The U+ line is actually fairly wide in the mid- and forefoot, in addition to a really wide heel, so it's not a guarantee. I do think the new vapor line, or even the vapor 40's from 2008 might fit you really well. Though like JR said, you really might have to consider going custom. I also have very oddly shaped feet, so I feel your pain, man.

You have flat, pancake arches like I do. I also have a hard time finding skates because of this. I just recently discovered Graf skates which come in different boot shapes for different feet. I actually just bought a pair of 735s. They're the only ones that don't bother the bone above my arch. The shape is the same as the G35 so if you fit those, the 735 might be a cheaper option. They do have a "narrow" heel according to Graf so take that into consideration since it looks like you have wider heels than I do.

I also had to get a wide version for the toes.

Measure the width of your foot at the widest part. What is it?

My tentative prognosis is the Ultra G70, in possibly a wide foot. Your heal does look rather pronounced, but try the G70.

My foot is 4-1/8" wide at the ball and about 2-1/4" at the widest part of the heel (in a non-weight bearing position). I'm not sure about the G70's because I tried the 707's on at one point and the heel in those was definitely too wide and according to the Graf website the G70 and G7 (G series 707) have the same size heel, but I'll definitely make sure I try them on. I've also always like an extremely locked in heel.

EDIT: Given the arch issues everyone has mentioned I'm definitely going to either get the custom Graf/Sidas footbed, or possible the SuperFeet, haven't decided which yet.

My foot is 3.5 inches wide. I take a narrow boot.

Do you mean to say the G7s? I don't believe there is a 707.

I meant the 707's back when they existed. The G7 is the modernized version of the old 707.

The G7 has a straight heel backstay shape. You definitely have some sort of a pronounced heel. G35 or G70, probably in wide. I know Wide + comes in the G7, as well.

Give Bruno at Bruno's Hockey Shop a call and he will help you out with this.

He should be there Saturday from 12-4.

I'm certainly not averse to going custom, but I'm currently in So. Cal. and don't trust anyone around here to do that job properly.

Where at in SoCal? If you are looking to get Grafs, then go to Ultimate Skate and Hockey inside Anaheim ICE. Bar none, the best fitting of a skate I've ever gotten.
