Flat Screen TVs

Recommended Posts

my son threw one of his wooden blocks at the screen last night and it cracked in two places so i'm in the market. haven't even paid attention to this industry since i bought a bravia 3-4 years ago.

i'm looking at LED tvs 40"+ and for some reason i can't find anything better than 120hz. i find lots of LCD with 240hz, but no combination of LED w/ 240hz. whats the deal there? i'd be willing to give up the LED lighting to get the faster refresh rate if i cant find the two together.

someone inform me on the ideal setup. a few movies, maybe 1-2 per week, lots of sports and maybe 1-2 hours of tv per day.

120 and 240Hz TVs need a good motion engine, otherwise you get a very floaty feeling to the picture.

Just got a 46" LED Sony Bravia. I'm very happy with it and the features it has like playing network-shared videos and displaying pictures in a slideshow. The interface is very similar to a PS3. It took some tweaking, figured out one motion controller on medium and one off with a true white on high gives a great movie and action picture.

120/240 hz tv's are overrated. I don't know if you have Blu Ray capabilities at home but if you notice, good Blu Ray movies run at 24hz on your tv. the 120/240 hz is achieved by your motion engine analyzing the images and adding a frame or more between two images. I have a 40'' Samsung in the 6 series which is not Samsung's top of the line in regular LCDs but fairly close and I turned off the the Motion engine because it sucked ass big time more often than not. There may be better motion engines out there that may do a good job but ultimatly I believe that 60 hz is the max that your eye can see/analyse.

LED displays are actually pretty good and consume less energy. As for 3D, is it really worth it for now? Is there enough content out there to justify it?

Here is a pretty good article on the matter. You'll have to scroll down a bit for the article as it starts about 1/4 down

Check out Sharp Quattron LCD.

why? is adding "yellow" for real, and if so why wasn't it done years ago? it's been rgb forever.

rustpot: I'm leaning toward LED, what is the refresh frequency on your model?

as for 3D, I hope it doesn't stick, I've seen my fair share if 3D movies lately and it fatigues my eyes. plus I don't want to sit at home with 3D glasses on.

so what should I be focusing on first and foremost? I'm not too concerned with blu-ray at the moment, simpy because the quality is so high that it looks staged, which it obviously is. anything that is using diffusers (feature films & TV series) I would much rather watch in standard definition, or at least not at the quality of blu-ray.

It was done years ago, just not very well.

Yellow, greens and light blues are supposed to be enhanced with the Quattron. I have not seen side by side comparisons with an RGB LCD, but my wife has, and she likes the deeper picture.

Plus, aesthetically, if that’s important to you, IMO Sharp makes the best looking TV’s, especially the Quattron models.

It's either 120 or 240, I didn't look too hard at the specs. I'm actually surprised at how good it looks from our satellite HD feed. Network TV is coming in very well on HDMI.

I think the price was around $1400 before the discounts we got.

ended up with a samsung 40" LED tv. was really apprehensive committing to 120hz at first for some reason, but i could barely tell the difference between 120 and 240. the HUGE difference for me was 60 to 120. sales guy even said the price difference wasnt worth it.
