Just my view on the "rich" kid thing. Just don't really jump into assumptions with it.(Using myself as an example) I mean you looking at my outer gear(gloves, stick, skates) you could assume that I could be rich. 9k gloves, 10k skates, One 95 stick. But really that's all I spend my money on, just cause I love hockey and play at a high level. But I try not to go around looking like a gear whore.

a surefire way to look "rich" is to wear your elite private school issue team jacket to stick and puck. i hit the ice last week to get the legs going before our final game and i ended up passing the puck around with a kid wearing his st. georges team jacket. tuition at this academy costs $12,000 a year and as a parent you have to either donate huge sums of cash to have your son considered for enrollment, or be a person of major influence.

that said, i don't think the kid was trying to look rich, and he definitely wasn't cocky, probably one of the nicest kids i've ever encountered at a stick and puck. we were feeding each other passes and making sure we both always had a puck on our sticks, as opposed to the typical douches who show up to stick and puck, but that's for another thread.

One thing I wanna add, is it's always nice to see those kids who are rich, but they still get it. Like they still know what's going on, if you get what I mean.

Idk if I'm misunderstanding the OP's thoughts/question, but I worry about being perceived as "too into" hockey as well. Esp when it comes to equipment. I admit I prob buy/change equipment too much, but I work extremely hard and so I don't feel bad about spending a little cash on the game I love. I def get some anxiety about showing up to games with new gear, though. I really get embarrassed when a teammate puts me on the spot asking "is that a new [such-and-such]". I really wish I could keep my gear obsession but blend in more.

In the beginning I had queries about equipment, but my aesthetic sensibility is fortunately pretty modest and nondescript. I don't like to dress ostentatiously so my equipment doesn't really stand out. I don't know, does some equipment seem ostentatious? Do people notice pricey sticks or something? I don't notice anything but skates. Might be my newness to the sport.

My concern here was the frequency of my attendance, but somebody addressed that sufficiently for me saying he or she would just assume such a person had a season pass. The responses have been satisfying, indicating no, people don't think such things much at all, and, two, it wouldn't matter if they did.

normally if i see a player who is consistently showing up to the ice sessions, i either think, hey this person loves the game as much as i do, or else hes out there to keep in shape or hang with the guys, not to mention wanting to improve on any skills.

plus it's FUN being on the ice. this is one of the best sports ive ever played and i am a late bloomer of the game.
