Girdle vs pants for 12yr old beginning ice hockey

Recommended Posts

Would appreciate some opinions on this matter.

My 12 yr old daugher is a beginner, we have the choice of outfitting her with a girdle & shell or ice hockey pants. She prefers the Shell /girdle but I am more concerned with safety This is a girls beginner league which is obviously non checking. Is the girdle /shell combo appropriate for a 12 yr old beginner?

Thanks very much

I wouldn't be worried about her using a girdle/shell combo in a non-checking environment.

She might be more comfortable in traditional pants as they will provide more freedom of movement and will not be as hot to wear as a girdle. The girdle should fit snugly in order to provide correct fit and protection. This could restrict her freedom of movement with skating stride. Due to the lycra girdle close to her body, it can get warm. For non-checking hockey, I think pants are more practical and the money you save over buying a girdle and shell, you can put towards another piece of equipment. Just my 2 cents............

I couldn't possibly agree more with this statement.

Thanks very much to all that replied. We ended up going with the Bauer breakout hockey girdle. Originally retailed for 89.99 but we paid $39.99 on clearance and the shell (new) was free from a friend.

Appears to be a very well padded higher end girdle. Given that and the opinions you have provided on protection vs pants I'm feeling pretty good about the choice overall.

Thanks again!
