LHS ripoff

Recommended Posts

Maybe its the shop's way of saying that they don't want your business for some reason.

yeah, I thought that too. Perhaps they are tired of people buying online, and they have decided to charge an extra $50 bonus for that reason. what I dont understand, though, is how come online shops can offer (sometimes) so much more reduced prices than LHSs? I know they save money for not having a physical shop and logistics, but c'mon, sometimes its 50% cheaper than LHS-ed! Theres gotta be more than that.

I think this is more or less settled. There are a suite of very knowledgeable people all saying more or less the same thing, and several specific reasons why the cost is necessarily higher in this particular case. It's pointless to speculate about the relationship between the OP and his LHS.

My suggestion to the OP would be to compare that $100 to the cost of ordering those exact skates (boots, holders, blades) as new customs, and then against the cost in time and money of Frankensteining them himself. If some cases, the time cost is irrelevant because it's a labour of love: in others, it's of the essence.

The reason why online shops can sometimes offer lower prices is because of what the item is, how many they bought in on from the vendor, the age of the item and are there MAP restrictions. I was just talking about this with my LHS today. For example, the One100 skate is a MAP item. It should be $599 U.S. everywhere. Once Bauer gives ok to advertise for less(I'd assume when they announce or soon to announce the newer model) shops drop the price. The average LHS doesn't buy in hundreds of pairs like an online superstore might. Hence come clearance time the LHS had no pairs left or maybe a size 12 while online superstore has 25 pairs in many sizes. No LHS is gonna buy stock that deep on a product, it would be retail suicide. This is just 1 example of how the online store could be cheaper...you get the picture.

the more you buy, the deeper the discount. the more you buy, the more likely you are to have access to close outs. the less overhead you have, the lower margins you need to turn a profit. this is how online retailers achieve lower prices.

I believe MAP pricing is termed. meaning it's based on days on the market, not on whenever Bauer says you can drop the price. manufacturer's are not permitted to control price, hence mSrp. suggested.
