Installing New Tongues/Added Felt

Recommended Posts

Hey boys, just wanted to see if anyone replaced their own tongues? Or even got them done professionally or at a hockey shop or something. Pictures or anything. Just wanted to check it out, ill be posting a picture of my homemade sewing/stitching job on my RBK 10ks with Graf tongues.

If you're looking for professional results, your LHS or cobbler (think that small one you have at your local mall) should be able to take care of it. Otherwise a thin pair of scissors and a sewing awl (combined with a serious DIY attitude) will do you just fine. Keep us posted.

Yeah it was fun...kinda like arts and crafts.

A tutorial on how to do it might be useful to anyone else that wanst to do it. Its pretty easy to do.

Here are my X:60s with One95 tongues, pretty easy to do by yourself once you get going. Used glue to hold the tongue in place (like Bauer does) and sewed them in.

With cutting, glueing, and sewing it took about an hour/hour and half tops.

RBK 10ks, with Graf Tongues, super glued then stitched in for support.

This guys 40's with white graf tongues, showed me how to stitch them in.

And side shot. I love those tongues.

Did you use an awl to do the stitching? What did you use for thread?

No but i just realized we have one of those and that would be alot easier. I just used a needle and thread. And tweezers or a thimble to push it through the tongues. The thread is white Dual Duty Heavy XP. Double threaded when stitching.

Oh man, this really makes me want to add some super felt-y (word?) tongues to my X:60s. Stupid question, but what is a source for buying just tongues?? Do you have to just find an old pair and cut them off?

Not stupid at all, try prostockhockey.com, eastwest hockey is having financial problems. Procstock has rbk and graf tongues. And on my rbk's i have my friends old graf tongues so that works too if you need help doing it let me know.

Thanks very much! I'm loving the look of the Graf's at ProStockHockeyGear. Their sizing is S/M/L/XL. Any thoughts on which would fit my 7.5D X:60s? Or is that sizing just referring to the length?

I have felt tongues installed in both my ice and inline skates.

The X:60's have Bauer Supreme tongues from EWH that were installed in a local shoe repair shop. The One95's have Graf tongues which were already installed when I got them (they are Matt Pettinger pro stocks from Tampa, thanks for the hookup JR)

What size Graf tongues would you recommend for my 9.5 Bauer X60s? Im leaning towards a size L.

Def large if theyre too big you can always cut them down

I'm curious, is there an advantage to the tongue flop, or is it mostly aesthetics?

Pros use a huge massive flop for protection over their laces, i know with my rbks ive been hit directly on the flop and it didnt hurt one bit.

I don't know if the flop is so much for shot blocking...the "flop" you're talking about is a shot blocker separate from the skate...Seabrook and Pronger wear these and it can be mistaken for flop fro far away.

flop does not help when blocking shots at all, its purely a personal preference/style (or PHEW) thing. guys like pronger use shot blockers which have been added to the tongues of their skates which actually do provide some protection as seen here: http://www.gettyimages.ca/detail/102074768/National-Hockey-League

thats not what im talking about, but ive seen guy in the nhl that have huge flop(maybe even double tongues) because the flop would protect shots on their laces. i know what the shot blockers are
