It's Not Just Hockey Parents.... Wow

Recommended Posts

My daughters are middle schoolers and were placed on a soccer team that is a combination of about five 8th graders and eight 7th graders, but they play in the older age slot due to the prevailing rules. Because of that, they've been outscored about 23-0 over the first three games. The closest they came to scoring happened yesterday on a shot by my younger daughter from one side of the net that went past the goalie and then rolled about 18" parallel to the goal line, but went out the other side before her teammate could reach it to tip it into an open net.

I've noticed two prevailing thoughts. The first two games we really got smoked, so people were saying "Wow, these other girls are faster and shoot harder. That's hard to beat!"

The second thought happened during yesterday's game, when it seemed to click for a couple of our players that it's far easier to chip it by the defense and try to win a race, than try to dribble through three girls. In fact, I almost think our girls learned it from the other team, because they scored three goals during the first half purely by chipping it by and going off to the races. Anyway, the girls passed more during the second half and had the most offensive pressure they've had this season, so it was obvious the mood of the parents was they were proud of their girls' efforts against teams that are clearly better.

The point isn't to be a Pollyanna about it, but to recognize that sometimes you'll be totally outclassed. Accept your lumps and move on to the next game -- presuming the other team isn't a prick about it. My daughters said the girls during the second game were saying, "God, our 11-year-old team could beat these guys!" When you're beating a team you clearly are better than, and that team isn't talking trash, it's best to act like you've reached the end zone before.

Wow... Jason, your post reminded me of the tag line I use under my emails "When you lose big you don't say much, when you win big you should say even less."
