Flyers' 2010-2011 Season

By doing this deal during the season it looks like they'll wait until summer to settle the Carter/Leino/Zherdev questions.

I think they took care of the most important one first.

I keep hearing they're trying to do it during the season as well....but my priority would be Leino. I think the Giroux signing has the potential to go down as one of the smartest things Holmgren has done in his tenure as GM. The potential of Giroux outweighs what he's going to be paid tenfold if you ask me.

The Flyers Twitter account just posted that Matt Walker and Michael Leighton both returned to practice today at the RBC Center...yay?

A little off topic, but I can't believe its been 25 years since Pelle Lindbergh passed. I still remember being 4 years old watching football with my dad on Sunday when they cut into the coverage with the news of the accident. Such a shame to see a young life taken that soon.

Looks like the Flyers are in an extending mood, potentially 10 years for Carter.

http://www.csnphilly.com/11/11/10/Carter-Notches-Hat-Trick-as-Flyers-Domin/landing_flyers.html?blockID=350972&feedID=695

Easy now....

I hope that the recent extension that Giroux signed might keep the cost of signing Carter down. I doubt it, but I at least hope it's reasonable. This might sound crazy, but I think that Giroux is more important to the team. Carter may score a lot of goals. On the other hand, I feel like he's invisible a lot of the time. I may be completely off in saying this, but he doesn't (to me) seem to make a lot of plays unless he's scoring. It seems like there are other guys on the Flyers who have a lot more impact on the game. With the salary cap, I hate the idea of throwing franchise money at Carter.

I don't get to see a lot of the Flyers, but I think that Richards, Giroux and Briere (when healthy and not suspended) are forwards that make more difference in most games than Carter. On the back end, I think that Pronger, Timonen and Bobrovsky are more important contributors to the Flyers' success than Carter. Of course Bob is just getting started, so the jury's still out on him.

I'd rather see them throw a moderate amount of money at Lieno than throw gobs of money at Carter. More bang for the buck, IMO. I worry that the Flyers might hamstring themselves financially for a long time by extending Carter for 10 years, unless he's willing to sign for a hometown discount. If he'd sign a contract similar to Giroux's I'd be in favor of it... but I don't see it happening.

I agree completely sickwilly. In a couple of years, Giroux will take over the face of the franchise role from Richards I feel. Everyone around here loves him, and it's growing more and more with every game. Don't count out what Meszaros has done for the team this year either. I think he's back to his style of play when he had his best years with Ottawa. He's been a pleasant surprise, for sure.

I didn't think Meszaros was a good pickup, initially (at least for what they're paying him). He has played pretty well during the games I've seen, though. He's growing on me.

You have to take the length to get that cap hit though, I'd be more concerned about any NMC or NTCs.

And sickwilly, I think Carter's style lends to that perception. He has a long powerful stride and in order to use his shot effectively in the offensive zone he has to avoid higher traffic areas. While I do think his defensive abilities may be exaggerated and he is a notoriously streaky scorer, there are not many centers out there like him. The Flyers have three legitimate top two (arguably number one) centers secured for 14-15M, and with Giroux's deal ending before he's UFA you have to imagine he'll be signing in the Carter/Richards AAV range. I think a lot of teams would be envious of that situation. Briere's deal is still not that great but I'll take it for his playoff performances. So for all the Homer negativity I like these recent extensions, and he did get the Flyers Leino for Ole-Kristian Tollefsen.

From TSN regarding the NTC

While Carter is not eligible for a 'no-trade' clause in his contract for the first year, he has a full 'no-trade' clause for years two through four. After that he has a modified clause for the remainder of the contract's duration.

Gotta love the way this team is playing right now, by the way. And the Canes lost 7-2 tonight after losing 8-1 to the Flyers, wow.

Not too much to say about the Flyers' recent play. This is certainly the team everyone thought they could be, but including a top-notch NHL goalie. Now I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop with Bobrovsky, gotta love Philly pessimism.

I love the fact that they're consistently putting up 40+ shots on goal during this streak. But I believe if there's a game they could lose, it's tonight.

honestly, in the past - i would agree with the pessimism. i.e. Leighton who just relied on his size, and angles.

Cechmanek who was just all around unpredictable. Bobrovsky on the other hand, is raw talent. i've never seen a goalie as quick as him post to post AFTER he's been down in the butterfly. his flexibility is wicked as well.

he's a guy who has been noted as taking goaltending very very seriously from diet, to regimen, to stretching, to practice. he's very very attention to detail just like another guy at the top of his game, Ryan Miller.

let's home Lemelin keeps Bob in tip top shape.

i'm pretty confident that Bob is here to stay; now i just pray he doesn't get hampered by injuries. that's what really killed Niitymaki who was a very similar style goalie (probably from being overworked in the olympic year)

He's probably one of the hardest-working athletes I've seen in a while, and not just on hockey. On top of everything he does hockey-related he's spending almost as much time on learning the English language. His pre-game routines are something else (I don't know of many goalies who sit in the stands before the game with their glove imagining what's going on). I read last night from someone on Twitter who said there is no "prospect" in this guy, he has serious talent and is only going to get better. I really hope they don't screw this one up.

Good story lines for the game after last year, and two hot teams going toe to toe. I'll definitely be watching this one.

Well they did both. They put up 40+ shots on Price tonight and lost! Happy for my team. They responded well and didn't let the "Broadstreet Bullies" wannabes intimidate them lol.. A very entertaining game to say the least and they are playing each other again on Monday in Philly. Should make for a very good game

The Flyers will beat 'em in Philly.

Quite possible but then again, both teams are riding a hot streak so both teams have a legitimate chance at winning that game. Philly's 8-3-0 at home while Montreal's 6-2-0 away. Either way it should make for another entertaining game.

Edited because I forgot to write away after Montreal's record

One that I will be there for. I knew I was making a good choice picking this game. But God help us if we start singing the Goodbye Song if we're winning. That really irked me last night. It's November...not Game 7 of the ECF.

I hear ya. Not a big fan on that chant myself either whether it's for or against my team. And with 5 minutes left in the game, it was far from over. A turnover here, a bad bounce there and we're in trouble lol.

Maroon is no longer part of the organization. The team sent him and David Laliberte to Anaheim for Danny Syvret and Rob Bordson. Confused about this move to be honest.
