Flyers' 2010-2011 Season

Recommended Posts

Looking forward to tomorrow night's game! I'm slightly concerned about the shorter D bench. O'Donnell continues to look shaky and Gustafsson looks like he is getting man-handled out there. Coburn played out of his head against Dallas....what a great game! He and the other big three Dmen have had to pick up the slack since losing Pronger. I agree Meszaros has turned out to be another gem. Very impressive and his slapper from the point is getting better. I am just worried that this is going to really wear on these guys over the next month, much like it did on the top four last year. Is Danny Syvret available? Not sure why he isn't getting another look instead of Gustafsson. I like that kid.

Anything new on the Zherdev watch? Am I the only one who wants to see this guy play? What a waste of talent...

In any case, I thought Nodl looked real good in the last game since being scratched for a bunch. Good jump, energy, and grit. He's a very good defensive player and a good grinder. I like him for the playoffs. Shelley should sit unless we need a fighter in the lineup. The guy is about as mobile as Hatcher on one knee. Versteeg has looked shaky to me, not sure what other people see. He has jump and speed, and decent hands and shot, but I don't think he makes great decisions with the puck. Not sure he really fits in with the team, and not sure what if any future he has with the Flyers. I personally would rather see Zherdev play over Versteeg, but that's just me (and that'll never happen). Carcillo looks good on the fourth line with Betts and Powe. Ovie's absence notwithstanding, tomorrow night's match-up will be a good division test for the Flyers.

Everybody thinks he's going to finally get it all together next year, then he does the same things over again. If you have the depth that Chicago had last year, or philly has this year, he's a nice guy to have. You can't count on him for any particular game, but he will win you a game here or there. The problem is not putting him in a position where he can lose you games with his turnovers.

Like he did against Atlanta?

Gustaffson is out tonight, I think I heard last. Boynton will be in. They called up Syvret today but he won't be in Philly in time for the game tonight. Shelley had surgery to repair an orbital bone injury he got yesterday when he took a puck off of Nodl's stick, so he's out four weeks at least. Maybe Zherdev will get some playing time out of that? Who knows, but according to Panaccio yesterday, Shelley got hit and got really angry coming off the ice, even kicking his helmet. I think he knows his ice time is slowly dwindling down with the playoffs fast approaching.

Looks like Bob is getting the start tonight. You think they'll stay with him for the remaining games and into the playoffs? I hope so.

I think Laviolette will continue to roll the goalies and then make an instinct call on who gets the first start of the playoffs. I really don't think either goalie has done enough to distinguish himself.

As for whether Zherdev will get some more PT with Shelley gone, who knows. At this point I think its safe to say he just doesn't get it, too much risk taking not enough effort.

So I think it's been made pretty clear who Lavy wants to start in the playoffs, giving Bob the start after the other night's travesty. Here's to hoping he can bounce back with a solid performance in another playoff-like atmosphere.

Does anyone else on here think O'Donnell is starting to show his age more and more every game? I'm really hoping he won't be absolutely dead by the time playoffs come around, because he's been getting burned by people game in and game out now. In the beginning of the season he was a standout defenseman back there with Meszaros, now he's seeming to be the weak point on the defensive corps.

They know they can't win the cup with Boucher. They hope they can win the cup with Bob.

Definitely agree on O'Donnell. I think Pronger's extended absences have probably taken the largest toll on him. Hopefully once the playoffs begin and his minutes decrease such gaffes will be less frequent. That said, the recent play of Meszaros/Coburn/Carle is certainly encouraging.

I'm much more ambivalent on the goaltending than most Flyer fans. Detroit has proven an elite goalie is not needed to win Cups, and last year's SCF featured some of the worst goaltending in the Final's history. Timely saves and a minimal amount of soft goals surrendered is more important than stealing games or even series, especially with the Flyers' lineup.

he was easily the best player on the ice , for the flyers , last night.

No doubt. It was good to see him bounce back. Too bad that they lost in the shootout, but I think Bob was the main reason that they got a point at all.

it seemed like the flyers are used to shutting down crosby & malkin - but kovalev and neil give the penguins a different look and they weren't quite sure how to play against them. bobrovsky looked like a completely different goalie than last game.

Sweet baby Jeebus, did you see his "fight" tonight? Hey, kudos for gettin in there and mixing it up 5 seconds after Carbomb's fight, but good lord. That fight was 2 minutes too long for anyone let alone a 39? year old.

Isles missed on a lot of chances tonight, a better team puts those in the back of the net. Right now I'm not sold on either goalie backing them on a long playoff run. They are going to have to step up their play quite a bit in a short period of time.

Both of them were pretty bad.

Chadd - You have to admit it though, Bob has looked a lot better his last two starts than his previous handful.

It was great to see JVR have a career game. Granted the one goal was complete luck but the first was pure hustle.

I was out of the country until the other day, haven't seen a ton of hockey. I'm just saying that he looked shaky against the Isles. There were plays where he was out of the play and they missed open nets or beat him and then hit posts. You can't afford to give up chances like that to the teams you're likely to see in the playoffs.

What a waste of time watching the Bruins game; it looked like they were all hungover tonight! Decision making was not sharp, passing was not crisp, chemistry off, no cycle game. I mean, yea...Bruins out hustled us all over the ice....but if this kind of play carries into the playoffs, it'll be a short run.

i've gone to at least four Bruins at Flyers games over the past two seasons, and I swear the Flyers lost all of them. I will never go to a game against the Bruins again, the Flyers play like a bunch of retards and it's boring as hell.

Tim Thomas owns the Flyers...his line vs Philly life time: 10 wins, 2 losses, 2 OT losses, 31 GA, 2.19 GAA .936 SV% 1 SHO

Last night's formula for a loss, just add the following: Play a hustle and bustle team who is on the road (less pressure) and looking to clinch a playoff spot, cough up 18 turnovers to their 6, win only 28 of 62 faceoffs.

18-6 in turnovers?! That's unacceptable playoff type hockey.

i'm glad i'm not shelling out money to goto these games down the stretch; ticket prices are outrageous anymore.

And they're being raised for next year, too.

Thomas played great, but the Flyers keeping beating themselves with turnovers. This is not what we want to see right now going down the stretch. Other Philly fans seem to echo their concern even though the are still #1 in the conference. When is Pronger set to return? The Flyers need him badly.

Anyone else notice the Flyers don't shoot the puck when they have a lane open. A think I counted five times when a player (Giroux and Leino to name two) could have shot and elected to make an extra pass which was broken up. SHOOT THE FRICKIN PUCK !

Some of the guys just look tired to me. O'Donnell is really showing his age now. Carcillo forgot to show up. Flyers should sit him if he's not going to do his job. Boynton....oh wow.

JVR has come a long way since this time last year. He works hard and deserves a lot of credit. With his size and strength I'd still like him to play more physical because I think he could be a dominant power forward. Nodl has looked good. If the Flyers wanted a different look, they could play him on an energy line with Betts and Powe and put Zherdev back in the line-up, but I guess Zherdev is on lock down for the rest of the season. I can't help but bring him up every time with this lack of consistent offense.

HUGE game tomorrow night! The Flyers have to beat the Pens imo. I think they will come out hard. Let's hope they can play that way for 60 minutes.

To each his own, etc., but there's nothing I enjoy more than seeing a Flyers game live, regardless of outcome.
