Need some skate advice... playing again.

Recommended Posts

So I have dedicated myself to a more active lifestyle, am eating much healthier, going to the gym 3x a week... hell, even working with a personal trainer.

I stopped playing a little over 2 years ago because I couldn't find a decent spot and didn't have the means to dedicate time to travelling into the suburbs (of chicago) for decent roller.

But I have the time and the means to do so now.

I was skating on CCM Pro Tacks with Sprungs when I did play but I sold those a long with some of my other equipment when I gave over the sport.

So, I'm looking at picking up a new set of skates and I remember really liking the afford-ability and package that the 5K Forsaken had to offer. I'd even go for the 7K if they were available in my size... but Hockey Monkey has the 5K in a 10E (which is good because I have a bit wider foot, always got pains on my outer foot when I wore a D boot) for like 119.99... can't really beat that.

But then Hockey Giant has that re-run of the Wicked Lights for 150 and has them in a 10D which I can accommodate...

I would think that just by price tag alone the Wicked Lights would be a better buy but I do know the design and technology is close to 8 yrs old... while they have a rabid following and their reputation is awesome... but I have to feel that even a mid level skate 8 years later would have a leg up.

(I also enjoy skating on the 72-76-76-80 configuration, although I don't know that there's a configuration that I don't enjoy skating on.

Add in that I just saw the Mission Lieutenants for ~170, which is a decent deal as well and seems like a nice mix of a not-too-low-end skate without harkoning back to years past.

I'm 6', 250ish (that's coming down, I promise) and can be pretty harsh on my skates.

Thoughts?

LTs are a good skate, but the wicked lights were a legend on their own. The chassis would be somewhat similar, but I think the LT was still 7000 series alu.

to be fair, the skates you picked out varies quite a bit. the wicked lights are really stiff compared to the other two. I don't think you'll be able to fit in the wicked lights in D if you have to wear reebok Es. Same goes for the LTs, the EEs in old missions are about as wide as a reebok in Ds. I'd probably pick a skate that fits my foot rather than accomodating the boot itself especially if you're picking a stiff boot like wicked lights.

i'd just go with the reebok 5k, at that price its really hard to beat.

I don't know if I *have to wear reebok Es*, but in my past Ds have always caused a wee bit of discomfort on the outside of my foot.

Although, i've always skated Ds, I figured since I'm buying new skates, may try the new sizing.

My Pro Tacks were 9.5D and they were a bit snug, but I loved those skates... so I'd assume the sizing is similar in the RBK line?

Not too familiar with the pro tacks but rbk has a similar fit to the vector line. the heels are wider on the rbks.

you can always try tour, they're really roomy in the forefoot.

Are you able to try some skates on? What size sneakers do you wear? The skates that are available now a days are a lot different from the Pro Tacks days.

With your build, I would look for something a little higher up. With the mid/lower end skates (especially Missions) we had a lot of problems with outsole separation. Just an FYI

Plus the RbK frames are crap and break really easily.

BTW.....Welcome back! :)
