Common injuries at ice rinks(workers)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Didn't really want to start a topic on this, but I really do need some help. What are some injuries that are often sustained while working at an ice rink. Whether it be coaching, instructing, pro shops or equipment managers. Help would be greatly appreciated, broken bones/fractures and cuts/lacerations are the best I could come up with so far. Please help!!

NBO.

You covered most of it. I worked in ice rinks all through high school and college and I mostly saw bumps and bruises. There was the occasional broken wrist by a figure skater, and once we had a hockey player get cut pretty badly. We always kept band-aids in the office, but that was the extent of the first aid we were allowed to give.

A few years ago in midget aaa a kid got hit and started having convulsions on the ice behind the net- I was the goal judge at the time, I was freaked out.

I opened this expecting a youtube video of a unmanned zamboni crashing into the stands or something:)

LOL! I'd pay to see that! Drunken Zamboni driver goes on a joyride! Wooooooo!

Had a guy that used to work in the shop slice his finger pretty badly trying to get a new set of steel in a holder. Another guy caught his finger on the cross grinder and pretty much de-gloved his finger and part of his knuckle. Pretty nasty. The first time I tore my ACL was when I was playing with one of the kids I was coaching and went to snow him and caught a rut in the ice. Our operations manager lost two fingers when he stuck his hand under the conditioner in the zam trying to clear it out. Fingers were gone before he even knew what happened.
