How do i notice if a Skate is to soft for me!

Recommended Posts

Hell at all!!

Now i have a x60 but unfortunately it doesn't fit me proper. And i think it is also too stiff for me.

HOw do i notice that a Skate is too soft, tried on the RBK 11k. Perfect feel like a sneaker.

Other question my big toe should touch the to cap a little bit, is this right??

THanks

In my experience a skate is to soft when it isn't responsive. For example I pulled out my old 9ks, (the first edition) for a couple ice sessions and they just didn't do it for me. Then again these are used and you said you tried on 11ks which I am assuming are new. As for the toe cap, I am not sure how old you are but if you are done growing then let your toe touch the cap if you like it that way.

Ideally, your longest toe should just brush the cap when you stand up. Once you start to skate, your toes will curl and grip a bit, pulling them away from the cap slightly. As for being soft, the only place softness matters for me is on the side of the foot. As long as it is still enough there to push off and stop, I'm fine. I prefer if my skates aren't rock hard in the ankles.

For me the stiffness of the skate is most noticeable during transitional skating forward to back or during tight turns, as both require a the most amount of input from your feet/ankles. During those maneuvers you want the sides of the skates to be stiff enough support your ability to hold your edges.

I have always heard that the 11k is a soft boot compared to other top tier skates but how soft is it exactly comparable to?

For instance, I have been skating on ccm u+09 for the past year and I have been thinking of upgrading to a new skate for some time now but have second thoughts about pulling the trigger due to some concerns

- The skate is soft (can easily push/flex) in the side walls of the boot in the fore foot. Was not occurring when I first made the purchase, noticed recently. Was told that it should not be a problem however.

- Not a heavy person by any means (160lb) I do not want to be stuck with a boot that is too stiff for me, potentially harming performance/feet.

My main concern is that I do not want to purchase a new skate if my current pair is not in need of upgrading. I also do not want to purchase a pair that will be stiff for me, and therefore not giving me the full benefits that it should. The problem is that I cant just buy a set of skates and try it on the ice and compare so without doing so what is some advice? Is the softening of the boot physically anything to be concerned about?

You're always better at having a slightly softer boot which you can flex thru then a stiffer which will feel like a cast. So the only real solution is to buy a new pair of 11k every 6 months or as soon as you feel the boot giving in too much.

Cheers

if your only playing mens league , any top end skate should last 10 years or close to it

When I originally responded I thought the questioned posed about softness was in regards to the degradation of a skate you already owned. I would think, unless you are an extremely heavy person or an extremely powerful skater, any of the top tier skates you're considering would not be "too soft" for your purposes.

I went from vapor XXXXs which were WAY too stiff to the 11ks.

I also weigh 160lbs. The 11ks are far and way a better skate for me. I'm a mid level beer league player, although I can skate with the better players (i.e. I'm not out of my league in games with advanced players).

The pump/air bladder system in no way hinders my skating - it only helps. So far I've had the 11ks for over 6 mths and skate 3-4 times per week and they've held up very well, better then the Vapor XXXXs did.
