Easton EQ50 vs. Bauer Pro 4 Roll - Which do you recommend?

Recommended Posts

Looking for new gloves with excellent protection for the back of the hand and thumb. Tried on a bunch of different brands and models, read a ton of online reviews, and have gotten some advice from pro shop people. Now I've narrowed it down to two - Easton EQ50 and Bauer Pro 4 Roll - and would like the MSH online community to chime in. Any reviews and opinions would be appreciated, whether it be about quality, performance, durability, or the lack of any of the above. Thanks to all in advance for their input.

I'll let you know after X-Mas. Getting the Bauers.

Already have EQ50's and I like them for the most part.

I have concerns over the long term protective properties of the new four roll with EPP padding. There's a good reason you are supposed to replace a helmet with EPP padding after a major impact and I am interested to see how it holds up to repeated shot blocks and slashes in gloves.

^^^I was wondering about that... if i'm correct the EPP is only on the top layer though. Isn't the foam underneath still strong enough to adequately protect you?

I haven't seen them myself yet, I don't know how they are constructed. That makes even less sense to me if it's the case.

I like the EQ50's because of the leather overlay on the palm. But that's mainly because I like non-grip sticks and the leather palm adds a little, but not excessive, grip.

Any instance of the black dye bleeding through the gloves and onto your hands? Have heard that is an issue.

Same palm as the EQ50. How long have you had the EQ3s, and have you been happy with them?

I've had EQ5's for about 6 months and I'm quite happy with them. none of the palm has torn, or even shown much wear, I've taken many slashes and shots to them and haven't felt a thing. The adjustable cuff is great too no problems with that either. I would definitely recommend these gloves.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. Looking to decide tomorrow which gloves to buy.

The new Bauer 4-Roll won't be out until April, so if you're looking at the current 4-rolls, there is no EPP foam in those. The protection in the current 4-Roll is outstanding, the palms are very soft, and there's hardly any break-in time. Also a reason why a lot of NHL players are wearing them and have been wearing them for years.

Same palm as the EQ50. How long have you had the EQ3s, and have you been happy with them?

Ive had them since june and play 2-4 times per week. I lik'em alot. there is barely any sign of wear on the palms. The right palm is a little sruffy from the tape on my stick , but not worn.

There a touch more snug than most 4 rolls ive owned , but not alot , so keep that on mind. My favorite part is the triple segmented fingers ( all but the pinky ) and seamless fingers.

The only thing Im not crazy about is the cuff , its quite long. But if your getting the EQ5 or 50 , you can shoten the cuff . So that shouldnt be of much concern.

Its a solid glove and Im happy with my purchase!

The adjustable cuff is a feature I particularly like. I'm an older guy who started playing before the short cuff gloves were around, so being able to slightly lengthen the cuff to protect more of the wrist is a big benefit. Glad to hear the palm is not an issue, and the triple-segmented fingers are great. I also like the thin plastic inserts in the glove - just a little extra protection besides the foam padding.
