Help with a high arch and skate volume

Recommended Posts

Over time, I've noticed a few things in my trips to the local shop.

I've been trying on skates and noticed that I failed the pencil test on a pair of one100s pretty badly.

I was less of a failure (but still failed) in a pair of one95s.

I was borderline in a pair of TotalOnes.

And I have passed the pencil test in a pair of CCM U+CLs. The problem with the CLs is that they cause me a fair bit of pain on the rear of the ankle bone on the outside of the skate. Otherwise they fit pretty well. I just can't seem to fix the ankle issue and I don't have this problem in my old One95s. The CLs are what I've been using recently.

I had trouble with the Pro Reloadeds due to the narrow toe box. That seemed to be cured with the CLs.

I haven't been able to try Vapors or Reeboks for a lack of my size locally, and I'd like to be armed with some more ideas before I make a much, much further drive.

I have a pretty narrow foot, but a high arch, which I think is why I have trouble with the pencil test.

Given the results above, what else should I be looking at?

Have you baked the CLs yet?

Yes. And they otherwise fit pretty well, with the exception of the intense pain they're causing to my ankle!

That's surprising. I thought that foam was supposed to be magic. I wish I knew something to tell you, but I'm learning myself.

I will say that it is really form fitting and I thought I was "there" finally. The pain actually didn't develop immediately. It took a while to develop, but I can't get it to go away. I've tried heating the area and remolding it, but it hasn't helped.

Are you satisfied that the pain is from pressure, not strain?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I can wear my old skates without a problem.

I should have clarified. Do you think the nature and location of the support (and/or lack thereof) in the CLs may be putting a strain on that area, or does it seem that it's rubbing or putting too much pressure there?

The pain is at about 10 o'clock on the ankle bone on the outside of my right foot (so think high and to the rear, which is an odd spot), and I think it is due to the pressure caused by the skate.

That should be something that can be punched out pretty easily at your LHS. Well worth a try before you buy another pair of skates, I would think.

Perhaps. But I'm not sure how punching it out would help, given that the area of the skate is filled with the soft foam. (Correct me if I'm not thinking about this correctly). Like I said, I've tried reforming the area and it hasn't seemed to work. It is a very stiff skate filled with pretty soft foam. I'm wondering if that isn't in fact my issue with these.

The punching would alter the actual skate material, as well as compress the foam in that area. Since this sounds like a pressure irritation, creating a clearance bump to relieve the pressure should relieve the pain. Fwiw.

Okay, seems worth a try.

Thinking pessimistically  , any ideas on other skate options for a guy who has high arches, a narrow foot, but likes a bit of a wider toe box and needs more volume than the one100 seems to give him?

Flexlites are a high volume skate to a point, but not for people with high arches/insteps IMO

No Bauer skate really is, but you're best served trying all these skates on

I'm in Graf G70 ultras with the heat molded insoles that came with the purchase of the skate

Do you have access to a shop that specializes in Graf skates?

I agree with this. It is a wide skate, but having both a high arch, and equally high instep, the flexlite isn't much better than the One95's in the instep area.

GrafPro55 put me in the right skates and I could not be happier.

I do have a Graf dealer nearby. I hadn't really thought of Graf, but looking over their website, they might be a good option. I'd imagine you can you get Tuuks installed pretty easily?

Yep.. That is what I had installed on my skates when I bought them..I received credit for the Cobra holders towards my Tuuk purchase
