Bauer skate fitment question........need advice

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I know this topic has been beaten to hell ( about supremes and vapors ), but I cant find this issue that is concerning me about purchasing some new skates. Heres a quick bio of my amount of playing and such......I am a recreational player who plays on a beer leauge team once or twice a week and i've never really owned high end ice hockey skates. Currently I own a pair of high end mission soldiers ( $350 ) for when I play on roller teams.....and i love them. When I fist got them, the bottoms of my feet would get a little soar from the new skate, but once the muscles got used to the skates design, that soreness pretty much went away. I know I probably dont need high end skates like the x50's of one80's, but I am one who really thinks that you get what you pay for. So, today I went to a local shop and tried on the X50's and the one80's and heres my concerns........anybody who has some advice, please chime in.

1) X50's...I tried on the 10.5 D and the 10D. First the 10.5 D, They felt ok, but the toe box was just a little snug and also there was just too much room up front in regards to my toes not coming close enough to the font of the toe cap. So i tried the 10d and found that the toe box is quite narrow here too. Other than the narrow toe box, they fit well. I do have a problem though with my big toe on the right foot. I have a corn like thing that when pressed against the inside of a skates toe boxes is quite painful. When I play, I wear a toe pad that virtually eliminates the pain, but i did not have it with me to try with the skate. With the X50's, it really feels like i wouldnt have enough room for it anyway. Other than that the vapors felt ok. I wanted to try the 10D in a wide width, hoping for a bigger toe box, but they didnt have one.

2) Supreme one80's size 10D and 10.5D, the 10.5 felt way bigger than the 10.5 D in the vapors, so i tried the 10D. They felt real nice and snug, toe box felt wider too. I probably could get the toe pad on and wear these skates comfortably. So, it sounds like the supremes are the way to go right? Well, here is something weird that i noticed. When I laced up the right skate, i noticed some upward pressure being applied to the outside middle area of my foot. It felt like arch support, but its on the outside middle of my right foot, not the inside middle where the arch is located. Now, when I put on the left skate, the same pressure was there, but not as noticeable as on my right foot. I thought to myselft that this pressure on the outside of the feet would actually transfer the power from my legs, to the skates to the ice better......but i really just dont know. Upon inspecting the design of the foot bed ( with the insole still inserted in the skate ), you could really see a rise in the foot bed on the outside middle area of the skate. It almost felt like a lump was designed into the skate for outside support. Going back to the pain I felt in my missions, i think way back in the beginning of owning my missions, they too may have had some outside middle rise in the footbed area and that may have been where my foot soreness had come from. Now that the missions have been used and broken in, i really dont get that soreness anymore. Again, when I tried the one80's, this upward pressure on the outside middle of the bottom of my foot was very pronounced and noticeable and there is a definite rise in the outside middle of the skates foot bed when you look into the skates.

Anybody have any thoughts? Sorry about the long drawn out story.

Thanks !

It sounds to me like your best bet would be to find a pair of vapors in 10E. Bauer only gives you the ability make size adjustments two ways on retail skates. That is, the length and the width of the front. The issue with the Supremes putting pressure how they do is not something that you can control. Your issue with the vapors (width of the toe box) is something that you can easily find a solution for. Find someboby who sells a vapor in 10E or 10EE and give it a try.

It sounds like other than pressure/pain on the outsides of your feet you like the fit of the One80s right? Well take this for what its worth, I'm no pro on hockey equipment nor do I claim to be. I was skating in One75s which from what I understand is essentially the same skate as the One80. I too had that exact outside foot pain and it never went away even after baking, breaking in, or trying Superfeet yellow inserts. After doing some reading on here I decided to try the One100s as I was told they were slightly wider, also went down a half size for proper fit. I got them, put in the superfeet yellows, baked them, and they have been awesome since day one and only continue to get better. I love these skates so far. I'm not sure if its just the better fit or the Alive material or what, but these are awesome. I wish I had just spent the extra money on the One95s in the first place. Again, this may not be your solution as everybody's feet are different. But your situation sounds awfully familiar to mine. Its awesome skating in good skates that fit right.

I think i may have to find a 10E and see if that solves the toe cap problem. Only thing i am afraid of is going to a wider boot when I really dont have a wide foot? Going wider would mean I'm really just compensating for the pressure being put on my right foots big toe and the painful corn that is bothering me.

God this sucks !!

Thanks for chiming in.

You know, i was actually thinking of trying out the one100's just for the hell of it, but i didnt. I really think my foot fits the 10D in the supreme the best.......but that pressure being put on the outside middle of each foot is just bugging me too much.......that being said, i guess my foot really doesnt fit that skate the best........

Well that's the same issue I had in the One75s which I believe is essentially the same skate as the One80. I do not have that issue in the One100s. They fit perfect. No more outside foot pain. Might be worth a shot.

from what I have read on here, the one75 and one90 were the same. The One95 and one100 are a deeper boot. Might fix the problem.

I have to agree...I understand that perhaps the one100's may be a little steep price wise.....but if they feel great, is it not worth it? If your feet have stopped growing, I would suggest trying the 100's......if your still growing...well that's a lot of paper to be dumping on a pr of skates....but you can always re-sell when your ready for next size up? My 2 cents!

Yea, i'm 33, so my feet have stopped growing. I really have no problem dropping good money on quailty skates, so I guess i'll be heading back to the shop to try the one100's.......and now that they are on sale everywhere, I can get them for a good price. I think my local shop has them for $499 now.

If anybody else has some info...please chime in too.

Thanks !
