Interesting show on headshots in NHL

Recommended Posts

will be repeated on CITY tv tonight at 11:30pm. Not sure where American members can view it. I'll look to youtube in the next day or so.

Panel or former players, GM's, doctors etc on the issue of concussions in hockey. It's called "Crisis on Ice?"

Sked: http://www.sportsnet.ca/tvschedule/

I'd watch it but Doug McLean says the dumbest things, assuming he's on it. If he's on, I usually immediately change the channel.

He's on, as is Kerry Goulet from Shoot for a Cure and Play It Cool who we all met at SJ2.

Interestingly there was an interview with Vandenbush and Kypreos. Essentially the first time they have spoken since the fight that ended kypreos' career.

Wish I could watch that. Just a heads up though, I read the guide as having it run from 11-12.

It's on CITY-TV at 11:30 and Sportsnet again at 11

I wasn't able to watch it, but I coincidentally will be meeting Kerry tomorrow. It turned out he's going to be in Tampa for the Run Walk Wheelathon, while we're heading there for the young ladies' spring break. He and I were just in Philly last week for the first concussions symposium and all kudos have to go to Kerry, because a number of participants credit him with being one of the early flag bearers for this cause.

Definitely. Kerry has a good take on the issue. I interviewed him for a piece and he was hugely cooperative and helpful. He put me in touch with Keith Primeau as well who also takes time for every interview on this subject.

I didn't watch the program, but was curious if they mentioned any use of the M11 helmet? I thought this thing was marketed as the safest helmet against concussions, though I rarely see anybody wear it.

I've heard Kerry say a number of times that the lead doctor on neuro-traumas from Mayo said that helmets or mouth guards have about thismuch effect on preventing concussions. In fact, when we were in Philly last week, we met with the head of sales for BRAIN-PAD mouth guards. Afterward, Kerry was talking to the lead doctor from UPenn's neuro-trauma unit about Brain-Pad's concept of keeping the lower jaw locked to prevent concussions. The doctor basically told Kerry, "I think their logic is BS....but....I'd like to get my hands on one of them to test it."

Yeah, every time I've heard a credible source that's been the story. To take it the other way, by locking the jaw the forces have to go somewhere, perhaps into the head. Chip Burke (Pen's doctor) used to (may still be) on the NHL's concussion committee and when he talked at a clinic he dismissed mouthguards and helmets as preventing concussions.
