How do I know what the proper length of pants is?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I'm looking for new pants. I'm about 6' 3" but skinny. About a 34" waist, but I'm more concerned about the length.

What is the general guideline for properly sizing pants? How far down should they go? (assume without wearing my shinpads, but I can bring then in-store if I need to)

How far down should they go?

So far, I've look at Bauer 80s and Tacklas (both the long versions).

mine go just above my knee cap just so theres a little bit of overlay from the pants going over the knee cap of the shin pad. just makin sure everything is covered up

I like mine just above the knee cap, when in shin guards. The farthest you can probably go is to the middle of the knee cap, in shins. Anything lower and I know it interfered with my stride a bit.

Hockey pants should come to at least the top of your knee cap of your shin pads and ideally slightly overlap a bit because when you crouch down in a bent knee stance, they will raise slightly. As long as the pant leg covers your leg overtop the shin pad when you are crouched down you are good to go. A lot of shin pads have the padded cuff on top nowadays to give you a little extra protection should your pant raise too high while playing but I wouldn't depend on that if your pants are too short and you catch a rising shot. As previously stated your pant leg length can go down as far as the middle of you knee cap on your shin pad as long as it doesn't interfere with your stride or movement. It's a personal preference. A lot of hockey pants have longer pant lengths or the length can be adjusted to suit a thinner and taller person.( example Tackla or Reebok ) Bottom line is you want to cover the thigh above the knee best you can when in a bent knee stance.
