Holder Replacement at Hockey Monkey

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to buy a pair of EQ50's. I also want to swap holders to Tuuks. There's a smaller independent shop in the area that I like, have had positive experiences with, & have heard positive things about from others. They do not have the EQ50's in stock, and I'm assuming they don't plan on stocking them, because their solution for me was that they'd order me a pair and then I could try them on (which will also take a few weeks). I know they're knowledgeable, and would likely trust them to install the holders.

The NJ Hockey Monkey has the skates in stock. They'll also presumably have a larger selection of skates, and despite my preference towards the Easton boot I want to try on as many pairs as possible, as well as having the option to try a half bigger/smaller if I'm that indecisive. However, I would have to rely on them to install the holders if I get the Eastons. I'm not aware of their knowledge/capabilities.

So, I'm torn. On one hand I want to give my business to a local shop that I know has a good reputation but lacks the inventory. On the other hand, I can go to a big-ass internet retailer & get what I want, though I don't know who's going to be drilling into my skates. And despite the awesome irony of it, I'd feel guilty trying on skates at a HockeyMonkey store only to go buy them through a local shop.

Who has some killer advice?

Why would you ahve to rely on them to install the holders? Try on the skates and buy them in Jersey and bring them back to install the Tuuks at your LHS...

Taking off Easton holders to put on Tuuks voids all boot warranties with Easton. You figure out the rest of what this means..........

I dunno. Should I really be as concerned now as I would have been a few years ago regarding Easton's durability? Unless you're just hinting that I shouldn't trust HM at all to do it. But I'm guessing you meant the former.

The pair I have now (Eastons) have served me well. My only complaint is that sometimes I feel like I'm on my toes too much, and the most common thing I hear about Tuuks is that they tend to set you back on your heels more. That's my main reason for wanting to swap the holders out.

Treat your skates like a car. Which mechanic are you going to take them to? The guys at the big dealership that work on volume and are being trained on your car or the local service station mechanic that you know will be there on Monday morning if your car breaks down over the week-end. Once your car gets screwed up, it doesn't matter who did it. What matters is who you trust and who will help you if there is a problem. The mechanic at the dealership may have quit or gotten fired by the time you go back there with any subsequent problem. The mechanic at the local service station probably owns the place.

If you do decide to go to Tuuks, go with the Custom holder not the Lightspeed holder. The Custom holder holes match the holes for the Easton Razor Bladz perfectly and you won't need to drill new ones. Better for the integrity of the outsole and less work for the dude at the LHS.-

Good luck finding them though...they're essentially impossible to get at this point.
