New To Ice

Recommended Posts

So now that my college roller hockey career is over, I'd like to make my way into ice. Unfortunately, almost all of my equipment was given to me by the school and so I had to give it all back. Of all the gear, really only my shinnies and elbows would work for ice. So I need to get skates, stick (I had a One85 for roller which I really liked and was thinking I'd get one for ice, I like the Bauer P88 or the Easton Sakic curve), pants (shell? or is that different), socks, shoulder pads, gloves and a helmet. Anything I'm missing? Also, what are some better and cheaper brands and models for each piece of equipment that I'll need? I am 5'8, 140 if that helps. Thanks in advance.

You'll need jock shorts or a garter belt to hold up your socks. You can get pants or a girdle and shell, but don't use a roller girdle for ice. They are not padded enough. If you liked your One85, try out a One80 or One100. Sher-wood makes some nice sticks for cheap (T80, T90). They also have curves similar to the Sakic and Lindros.

Long story short -

Skates: Try on as many pairs as you can, fit should be your ultimate gauging point for whether you should buy or not

Stick: Agree with Jason, the One85 was made a bit longer so something to keep in mind iirc At that height/weight, I'd

Pants: For simplicity's sake, pants should fit snug and should cover around the middle of the knee cap of the shin pads. Shell and girdle combos are definitely a possibility though.

Jock Shorts/Compression jocks: Most if not all should have velcro straps on the legs to attach socks to.

Shoulders/Gloves : Try on pairs, shoulders should provide coverage for vital areas (collar, belly, lower spine, bicep) and gloves are mostly personal preference

Helmet: Should fit snug, try on different brands to check for fit.

Thanks for the input guys. Another question, since an ice puck is obviously heavier than a roller puck, what flex should I look for? For roller I had an 87 flex and when I cut it down it was a bit over 100 flex. I would like something whippier and so I was thinking I'd go for a 77 flex and so when cut down it'd be around 90, or is the 87 flex (little over 100 cut) gonna be whippier and be my best bet because of the increased weigh of the puck?

Also, how do you guys feel about buying used skates or sticks so that I can get more of an upscale pair of skates or stick for less?

Thanks in advance!

from my experiences you want something a little less stiff for ice since the surface offers less resistance and it takes more getting used to at first. I mistakenly started using my R flex TPS shaft outside and my shot was way off because it took so much longer to release it than it did on the ice since the surface held it up so much.

someone please correct me if I'm wrong though. I have been drinking.

Stick flex is debatable and purely personal preference. Some use softer, some firmer. Just depends on stick, form, etc.... One of those things that you learn by trial and error.

don't drink and post max

As for the used skates question. If it fits you well and is a higher/mid-end used skate, it couldn't hurt to try. It obviously would be broken into someone else's foot and so would take some time getting used to.
