Worth stepping up to better skates?

Recommended Posts

every year when i get skates in there always in the 400 dollar area. thats all my dad will pay for. bauer xxii x40 and one80 are the skates ive had for the past 3 years, one80s being my favorite. this year i made a way better team and will be playing at a higher level than i ever had before. im thinking about adding some of my own money to get the bauer x7.0 for 600? is it a good idea to "upgrade" maybe not all a 200 dollar bump? or would it be better to get the one100 since my one80s were my favorite?

If you have to ask the question, then you probably don't need them. If you were breaking them down so fast that they didn't last the season, then an upgrade might be in order. You can always buy some closeouts and get a better value, you just have to time that right. At some point your feet will stop growing and better skates would be fine as you wouldn't have to replace them every season.

As for the model, supremes and vapors don't fit the same way. If one is the right fit, the other isn't. Stop buying whatever happens to be the newest model and buy the one that fits best. You're much better off with a $400 skate that fits than a $600 skate that doesn't.

it just happens to be that i outgrow my skates around every august. i have to slow down soon though im 15 at 6'0" and shoe size 12. my dad is 6'6" and he is a shoe size 13. ive had the same shoes since last september and they still barely fit and thats never happened before. so i think my feet are slowing down. thats why i think i could get a nicer skate because i would still fit fine in them a year later. i am also flat footed if that helps with suggestions. i liked the supremes because there was more pop in the boot and it felt like could skate faster. they always gave me a blister on my one heel though. the vapors never gave me blisters and were more comfortable on my stupid flat feet. they didnt have the pop of my supremes and felt heavier and kinda bulky. its been a year since ive worn them so my memory of them is fuzzy. i have heard of people switching from bauer to graf and loving them. is there a graf/other model good for flat feet that i should look into?

So your "favorite" skates gave you blisters and didn't fit your arch? Take a minute and actually think about that and hopefully you will see how utterly absurd it is.

yes, they hurt my feet and give me blisters. yes, it is absurd. i skate better in them and thats all that matters. im not going to whine about a blister and handicap my game for comfort. trying to find a skate with the best of both worlds is hard and thats what im here for.

I tihnk your best bet is to go to a reputable shop and buy your skates from them. They'll size you up correctly assuming you can give them good feedback on feel.

If you think that your One80s are good for you now, wait until you wear a similar pair that actually fit :)

i know i cant wait for that day to come! i went to peranis for the vapors (that fit) and a different shop for the supremes. its a pretty tiny place so they dont have much but the guy who owns it sure knows what hes doing. i dont know. its hard to tell how a skate feels until you actually skate in them. they felt fine in the shop when i tried them on. no slip or anything. its just dumb.

I highly doubt that he "knows what he's doing" if he fit you for skates that don't fit your arches and give you blisters.

I feel like if something works for you, then just stay with it. If a $400 skate does the trick, then why not? But at the same time, I can understand the logic of just spending a lot of money once as opposed to buying lower quality things multiple times and spending more money in the end. I feel like I fall victim to that a lot where I think that i don't need something that good, so I settle for something of less quality, but I ended up buying the higher end stuff anyway. You're probably better off getting something in the Supreme line just because it'll be what you've liked most. Like others have said...fit first.

I don't know how true this is, but from my experience, I have an easier time finding a good fit with higher level equipment. I might be completely off base (excuse me if I'm wrong) but I feel like higher end gear offers a more general fit that most people will like, especially if you've narrowed down the brand. That is to say that you'll be more comfortable the higher up you go. I realize there are different situations, but every time I've gone up in terms of skates, the higher end stuff "out-fits" the lower end stuff based on the better quality and better overall make.
