Skates a question of quality/durability

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of pulling the trigger on a new pair of skates. I have tried all the following skates on and they all fit good. The question i am asking is on the quality and durability of them. I have used reebok skates for the past 5 years and have gone through 4 pairs. I find they breakdown after a year and the the boot is no longer stiff and the ankle does not lock in very well. The skates I am looking at is the ccm u Cl, Bauer vapor x7.0. The one thing i like about the ccm besides that they are made in Canada are the small details like the outer boot being a surlyn material, 4 copper rivets and 2 vent holes in the bottom of the skate. When look at the Bauer i am not sure about the x7.0 as they are new and i heard the x60 had liner ripping issues and outside peeling. I have searched many websites and like any feedback regarding if this is in my head or are both skates a quality one and will last at least a season. I am 220lbs and i play 2 times a week.

Well, higher end skates are made of better/stiffer materials and assuming you're moving from a low/mid end Reebok skate, the ones you mentioned will be more durable.

I've heard/seen issues with the TotalOne liner.

Keep in mind too that the CL and Vapor fit different; if you're coming off a Reebok boot and you liked the fit, I'd consider the CL before the Vapor and even Supreme before Vapor too.

I did try on the one100 supremes and my toes were cruched at the end and when i tried on the same size in the vapor my toes were fine and found if i was to heat mold them it would fit better in the sides and teh ankle and tongue were a better fit. The CL did fit the best and i wonder why hardley anyone uses them or has feedback.

Go a half size up on the Supremes then?

The CL's have the most thermoformable foam on the market right now, it offers unreal fit adjustment post-baking. That's what I've heard

Sounds strange. My experience, and that of others I've seen mentioned, is that the Vapor is tighter in the forefoot/toe area than the Supreme. That's the reason I took the One95 over the X60.

It was a bit tighter in the fore foot and i felt if we baked it would be a better fit, but the overall lenght was better than the supreme. when i tried on the one100 it was not long enough and the 9.5 felt too big. I did not like the overall build quality of the one100 for the price i would be paying. The vapor skate seems to have a more durable outsole and would not peel or breakdown. the supreme tongue was very stiff and did not flex foreward very well. The supreme is supposed to put you on your heels and coming from a rebok from many years i am used to skating in the middle and toe of the blade. I think i am going to get the CCM cl skates, it is a better fit and build quality.

Just got the CCM U+ CL's. Took a few skates to get used to but then they were great. I got them used from a Canucks equipment sale, originally worn by Maxim Lapierre, but I paid only $200 and they were in great shape. I got them remolded and they fit great. The foam is super moldable and the skate fits perfect to my foot. I've always used CCM/Reebok skates so if those are the type you like then I would recommend them, as the vapors are much different.
