Sock idea

Recommended Posts

So, I've always hated wearing a garter belt or using the velco on a jock/shorts. I always did because, well, it's what you did. I certainly didn't want my socks to fall down during a game (which I saw happen to a guy). Then my buddy stopped using anything to hold his socks up. He ties laces around his shins and that seems to do the trick for him. However, I could never figure out how he kept them from bunching up above the top of his shin pad. I could never stand to wrap tape around my thigh. It felt too restrictive. It was then that I remembered a guy that used to wear his socks upside down, with the narrow elastic ankle at the top. He did it for style, but it got me thinking, what if I my socks could fit over my shin pads and then stop a few inches up? I decided to take an old pair of socks, cut them down a few inches, and then sew in an elastic band to keep them from slipping back down over my shin pads. They're too short to bunch up above my pads, and the elastic doesn't feel super tight or restrictive. I'm going to try them out next week.

If the issue you're having is with the bunching of socks, then that's a good idea :) However, most people would argue that any skin/undergarments showing is the real problem associated with bunching, not the literal uncomfortableness. I do something kind of similar with my socks. I use a youth size garter belt (I am not a youth :P). The adult

fits fine, but the youth is tighter around my

waist, so I can hike my socks up higher with the garter clips, and it doesn't pull the belt down.

That's the one thing I'm wondering about, if I'll be showing any skin :P I tested them out with my gear when I finished the modifications and all was good. Then again, it wasn't on the ice, or the bench. That is one reason I always wondered why players wore their pants cut in the inseam or unzipped. They leave everything showing :-)

So whats holding up your shin pads?

The CCMs I use have the cross strap system (or whatever it's called) and I still throw tape around the outside just below my knee, where the tape channel is.

I've been curious about that. I see guys with the pant inseam ripped open alot it seems. Why?? Just for ventilation?

Looks stupid, IMO. But thats just cause I'm getting old and crotchety I suppose.

I like the sock idea, but since I just discovered the velcro tabs on the jock shorts and ditched the sweatpants, I'll stick with that for the time being.

I have never liked the feeling of a garter or velcro jock either so I instead attached a velcro tab to the top of my shinpads just above the knee cap. Works great and for extra ventilation I can shorted my socks to just above the knee if want. ON a side note, I also skate with my zippers open for ventilation and to allow the pant leg to slip over the cap of shinpads without bumping into them with every stride.

sew socks to sweatpants or even loose fit under armor type pants, then turn the pants with socks sewn on at desired height inside out, and cut the excess leg material out from inside the sock. I used to do that, then i just got used to a garter belt. Same idea as hocks, or whatever those were called, only cheaper and more options

For a jock with Velcro tabs, you can sew matching Velcro directly on the sock. Best way to do it is to alter the sock so its finished length is just at or above the top of the Velcro on the jock. Then sew a piece of 2" wide Velcro directly to the sock. Obviously, this system is best if your jock length and style stays the same for a while. But this can be done repeatedly with each new pair of socks. The tabs can be cut off and reused on different pairs or use new pieces since it's so cheap. You can also sew the tabs on vertically (like on Reebok Edge socks) if you want more adjustability. One tab on the front is enough, but you can add one on the other side if you need extra holding power.

Well, I skated with the modified socks last night and they worked pretty good. I think I made the first pair too short. Overall though, I liked the feel of not having to use a garter belt or the velcro.
