I'm hoping I can get some feedback here from those who've been before, but I just purchased tickets to the Caps/Red Wings game on Oct 22nd, and am wondering if anyone has any knowledge of affordable hotel options around the arena. I'm flying in from Halifax, NS, and have never been to Washington, let alone the states, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I am in the Canadian Forces, and I do not know whether this would apply for me as well, but if anyone had any insight into military discounted accommodations or the like that I may be entitled to, just to save a few dollars, I'd appreciate that as well. Hopefully I'll run into some of you, if you're attending the game as well! Cheers!

Right in that area hotels can get pretty pricey. You might want to look into some of the ones just outside DC in N Virginia. Arlington/Alexandria. They'll be about 15-20 min on the metro and a few blocks from the Metro Station usually. PM me if you have any other questions.

If you can try the name your price option on priceline.com. I recently got a 4 star suite for $75 a night (it was during summer though, may be more during winter?)

You might be very far away on priceline...do yourself a favor and look for a hotel that is out of DC...but close to a Metro. You don't want to stay in the city is you are looking for cheap, and you don't want to drive either. The Metro is really easy. Red line to MetroCenter...or yellow/green line to Gallery Pl Chinatown.

I was in DC for the Tampa/Caps playoff series. The hotel that I always stay at in DC is the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill (http://washingtonregency.hyatt.com) From my experience, the rooms usually run about 120/night. They only have valet parking (41/night I think?) but if you drive around the block there is an underground parking lot that is 20/day or 10/day on on weekends- although this could have changed. DC also has free street parking Saturday after 10pm until 6am Monday mornings.

As far as this hotel is from the Verizon Center, you walk out the front door, turn left, left again onto E St NW, walk 6 blocks to turn right onto 6th St NW and the arena is a block ahead. The hotel is also about 2 blocks away from the metro Union Station which will put you right on the corner of the arena.

Dunno if you'll pick this one particularly, but I hope this helps at least.

Thanks for the input. I ended up booking a room at the Mariott Crystal City I think. It's relatively close to the airport, and near the metro station that takes you to the rink. Price was just under $100, and I couldn't complain. However, I'm hoping I can check-in early, or at the very least leave my bag in a secure place at the hotel, so I can venture downtown and do some sightseeing in the afternoon, as opposed to sitting at the hotel til 4PM. Either way, I'm still excited.

Marriott Crystal City is walking distance to the metro. Yellow line toward Mt. Vernon Square and get off at L'Enfant Plaza/Gallery Place. That is literally at the Verizon Center.

After the game, they will run a shortcut blue line so you can hop on that too (or get back on yellow whichever comes first). Blue line is normally a longer ride with more stops but post game they follow the yellow line to get into VA, then take the blue line stops from there (Crystal City metro is a shared stop, so blue or yellow line will get you there).

If you are planning on getting into the City for a bite to eat before the game, I would recommend Matchbox. Great food, good beer list, but not a big restaurant, so you need to allow plenty of time in case you have to wait to be seated. Less than a block to VZ center then.
