Buying skates - New York

Recommended Posts

I will be in New York in the coming months on holiday from Australia. I wanted to take the opportunity to try on and purchase a new pair of skates, as options in Australia are very limited to say the least. Can anyone suggest a shop in New York that has a good range and staff that know what theyre doing? I'd like to go to Hockey Monkey in Jersey but from what Ive read the staff there seem to be not that great. Any help much appreciated!

I'm not too sure where in New York you're going to be but if you will be on Long Island, Amity Harbor Sports is a really great shop. The staff is awesome and really knowledgeable.

Darkstar50 runs an LHS and is an all around great guy, send him a PM. His shop is in Hackensack at the Ice House I believe in NJ.

Seconded. I buy all my equipment there. It's in Hackensack, NJ. Very easy access from NYC, a lot of my teammates live there.

Not bashing here but all my experiences at Paragons has been that they don't have a knowledgeable staff on hands at all times. You'll be lucky if you find someone there that has a basic education/experience in hockey equipment. One event there I stepped in to help a tourist with skate sizing as the worker there was sizing them incorrectly. Not that I'm an expert but when you are being put in a boot that is the same size as your shoe size there something wrong there.

Which "coming months"? Some shops may not have as deep an inventory after a certain time as they are clearing out 2011 stock waiting for new models in Spring 2012.
