Flyers' 2011/2012 Season Discussion

Recommended Posts

As I understand it they can't use the money until the season starts and they officially put him on LTIR each year.

I believe that's correct, but as I understand the current rules they're allowed to exceed the cap by 10% (~$6.5M this year) during the offseason, though I'm not sure when the cutoff is for when they have to be under. I also believe they can put him on LTIR at the start of camp, which is when the season technically starts. So I believe the 10% exception and putting him on LTIR at the beginning of camp would effectively open up the cap space for a permanent contract, not somebody just brought in during the year, but I'm not positive.

Yeah, I think so.

same groin strain that has been bothering him for last few weeks, i say let him sit till after the all star break... he is going to be a guy come playoff time that we are going to heavily count on

and danny b's concussion sounds like it may be a really bad one based on what he said after the game - i sure hope not

It's legal by all current NHL standards, but I'm not a fan of any hit that someone initiates after the puck has been moved.

What a heart breaking loss yesterday to the Bruins; i felt it was the most entertaining game of the season for the Flyers. Second efforts were prevalent, hitting was tremendous, and animosity was clear.

...Now if Bryz can stop someone in the damn shootout; i believe he hasn't stopped a shooter YET this year. something like 0-11 now? Makes no sense for someone like that. Got to be all mental, but does that really surprise anyone?

ESPN NHL - Injured Blackhawks C Jonathan Toews will miss All-Star Game, replaced by Flyers LW Scott Hartnell.

way to go #hartnelldown~!

personally ive always loved hartsy, i know at times he can dissapear and be a streaky player but he is a glue guy and a guy who is the perfect teammate... not to mention one of the nicest guys to meet from what ive heard off the ice. but good for him, hes worked hard and all the BS he went through a few years ago seems to be behind him! hes finally earning that contact

@teamblue

i know what you mean man, i was at the bruins game and it was by far one of the most exciting games ive seen. bryz just doesnt give you the confidence that we can hold a lead... it almost seemed like boston scored whenever they wanted to. he better find himself, IMO id go with bob right now, i dont think the kid has gotten a fair shot after what he did last year winnning almost 30 games and coming out of nowhere

Was just in a live chat with Harry Z over at Philly.com, and one of the questions he was asked was "How often do you guys keep in touch with Chris (Pronger) as he recovers?" Harry Z's answer was "next question."

Yeah, so I think that just about settles it. Pronger's done.

yeah ive been feeling that too.... even reading a few articles, it sounds like pronger may be battling depression, i mean its the first time in his career he really has been put on the shelf and with his age, injury, and years left on his contract, it makes sense that he could be dealing with that. i hope not , and i hope chris comes back, but it sounds like a pipe dream at this point.

how was the live chat ebondo? i hear harry z is a real cool guy to talk to.

Yeah thats really contradicting. CBJ could use a goalie and philly is in up to the neck in same department.

3 way deal?

There are better measures of goalies than that, but they require relatively in-depth knowledge of the position. Some of the scouting packages NHL goalie coaches put together on opposing goalies -- which, of course, are completely ignored most of the time -- are incredibly detailed, to the point where they say things like 'shoot from this area to this part of the net and you will generate a rebound to this area this often,' (and by area, they mean the space one player could usefully occupy with his stick in shooting position) or, 'holding the puck for X seconds in the offensive zone with threats to the net will increase your chances of scoring on this goalie by Y percent, and decrease your chances on this goalie by Z.' Scouting (and obstinacy in the face of well-informed shooters) is what killed Justin Pogge, for instance, and why certain otherwise capable goalies get routinely destroyed in shootouts.

The trouble with Bryzgalov is less how many than how he's letting them in, and his reaction. His default reaction is to put goals behind him and move on, then throw up his hands after the game and say, "I acknowledge that something is wrong, and want to do better, but I don't know how." That's fine-- right up to the point at which your teammates start to question 1) your desire and 2) your awareness. Teams need to believe in their goalies, whether that belief is well-founded or not.

I'm wondering if this scouting is why Bryz keeps getting torn apart in shootouts. He's stopped what? 1 out of 12 shootout attempts this year?

Wow what a read that was. I always tell people about this, and they shrug it off and tell me I'm crazy. But this is hard evidence of a better way to track goaltending.
