PiKappaPhi 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2004 I use to lace up my skates so that before I tied them, I wrapped the laces behind my heel then around to the front then tied them. I just started just straight lace them up and its a bit weird feeling. How do ya'll do it? Looking for pro's and con's I guess.
Dangles 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2004 I do mine up..well normal? They're done very loose because:a ) They're a bit to smallb ) I like a loose skate to maximize mobility in my ankles an feetI also pull my shinpad and sock over the tongue to prevent getting a shot where there's no protection. Chadd 916 Report post Posted November 21, 2004 Mine are loose to the bottom of the ankle and fairly tight from that point on up. With the S500 they can be fairly tight and still allow for excellent forward flex in the ankle.
biff44 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2004 Back in the day, we used to wrap the laces around the boots once before tying. But I think if you do that today you will get laughed at. Get some shorter laces.
RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted November 22, 2004 Back in the day, we used to wrap the laces around the boots once before tying. But I think if you do that today you will get laughed at. Get some shorter laces. Laughed at...or yelled. Apparantly it's really bad for your ankles. May skates came with WA-A-A-A-AY too long laces, and I had to wrap. I recently bought 96" ones, down from about 120" and they are a lot better...
Dave 1 Report post Posted November 22, 2004 hum, my procedure:1st I make the laces very loose on the 2nd lowest eyelet. Then I lace them up at average strength from the 3rd lowest eyelet to the top. THEN I restart at the 2nd lowest eyelet (that I had intentionally left loose). My reason for this is that it'S the only way for me to avoid having to relace the skates once on the ice. When I just lace them up from bottom to top in one "pass", there will always be anything that doesn't fit. For example your heel will only lock into its pocket when you've reached to top eyelets and after that you'll have to redo the lower eyelets. As for tightness: I used to tie them up very tight for as long while. Now I've realized that less tight lacing is more comfortable and it gives me better control over my feet. Hard to explain. I don't make the low eylets very tight, the 3rd from top really tight and the top ones rather loose again.
crosskore 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2004 I tie my skates so my feet turn blue.Well.. not really.. but Really Really tight. I also wrap my laces around before I tie the last knot. I dont see how thats bad for you ankles?
MDE3 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2004 This may be one of my oversimplified generalities, but in my experience, the longer a player has been skating, and the more proficient they become on skates, the less the player tends to tighten the laces. As their ankle strength grows and their confidence and balance as well, many players opt for a looser fit, for comfort, and to allow their feet to swell..as they usually do during a game. Additionally this looser fit permits a better pronation of the ankle in many skates, in order to generate a more powerfull and extended toe kick. One of the exercises I used to make my son do when he was getting better on his skates(inlines) was to "session skate" with the laces completely untied..this will teach you to feel your balance points better, and develop your ankle strength. crosskore 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2004 Well my ankles are strong. When I used to play roller hockey, I was really lazy and sometimes I wouldnt even do up my skates, I would just tuck the laces in. I just think having my skates tight is comfort. It feels right, It has nothing to do with how proficient iam on my skates.
Accord 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I don't even tighten my skates much at all, I just give a nice little tug on the laces at each eyelet and then tie them tight on the top eyelet and that's it. In the lockerroom I see guys with their skate tying tools breaking a sweat they're trying to make their skates so incredibly tight. You should never tie laces around the back of the skate, because it will damage the tendon guard beyond repair. mickz 107 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I used to wrap my laces before too because they were too long. I got shorter laces and tie them like shoes now. It does feel a bit looser but you eventually get used to it and I like tying it like this more than wrapping it around the ankles now. My ankles have a lot more room to move. No matter how tight I pull the laces on the first go, there always seems to be unwanted slack. I'm not a fan of backlacing either. Bah my feet and skate situation's brutal anyways. Sniper9 535 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 i tie mine not super tie and not loose.. just one pass through each eyelet .. i got shorter laces too now so i dont have to go once round the back which was cuz my laces were way too long as well.. i think loose and tight are just preference as i cannot skate with a loose skate.. i put my shins over my tongue too so that my skate is more stiff up top.. i dont like having any ankle movement
