Fake/China APX?

Recommended Posts

I bought a new retail p08 APX yesterday and used it during my league game. After the game in the locker room a teammate was checking out the curve and pointed out that the taper looked wrong/weird. I compared it to my other APX, a p14, and low and behold they looked different to me. The sticks are cut to the exact same length and the decals/graphics match up exactly on the sticks. The p08 also has a European patent number stamped on it which I've never seen before.

I took the stick back to my LHS today where I purchased it and they told me the stick was an APX and that my eyes were playing tricks on me. Can you guys on MSH help me out? Am I losing my mind or does something look wrong to you on this APX?

I think I read somewhere on here that the Euro version is built up a little tougher. This might explain the different shape in the taper. When I bought an APX through the Bauer MyID program it showed with the same European patent number.

And you immediately assume it's knockoff and it's Chinese

Considering there was a post about a fake easton RS recently I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility. Go check out *** and search for Bauer if you don't believe knockoff sticks are widely available.

Hmm if this is the case wouldn't this change the way the stick kicks?

Not sure. I will compare my apx that I have and let you know if they are identical.

My P08 has a thicker taper as well. It is an 87 flex compared to a p92 102 flex and p91a 95 flex. My P08 is not a european model though.

thanks for checking for me skyscrape. Looks like all is good except maybe the fact that knowing the taper is thicker will mess with my head lol.

Not all sticks are knock off either, the factories in China are contracted by vendors to make sticks (sometimes more than one vendor in a factory) and there will be issues like a cosmetic error, production run issues (a batch of sticks are not up to par) or sticks are finshed but the order was cancelled. The factories are then stuck with sticks and more often then not are picked up by people trying to pass them off as real retail sticks. You can even sometimes find a batch of sticks (the TeXtreme® pattern is very obvious) without decals on Chinese websites trying to sell larger batches. A friend of mine is able to pick up Reebok Edge NHL jerseys that were rejected by Reebok for quality control issues (stiching mistakes, materials not straight, etc) in Asia (Korea to be exact) for dirt cheap, he was getting them sent here in Canada and selling them, obviously not as 100% retails but as seconds.

Funny story told by the Easton rep, in Mexico where they make their sticks the workers sometimes get the sticks that can't be sold at retail, so you see kids playing street hockey with EQ50's and RS.

If was a Chinese knock-off, I'm sure it would feel different on the ice. Try your buddies and see if his feels different.

Both APXs are mine. The P08 feels slightly heavier towards the blade but I can't comment on the shot because I'm not having the easiest time transitioning from the p14 to the p08.

If you bought it from a reputable LHS that is a Bauer dealer there is virtually no chance its a fake. A Bauer dealer is going to be getting their sticks directly from Bauer, not off the internet where they could be getting fakes.

Now I guess there are some unscroupulous ones out there that could be getting sticks from third parties, but, again, if its a good dealer with a good reputation and their a licensed Bauer dealer, there should be no question to its authenticity.

Try shooting from the heel. The drag and snap motion of most toe curves is not as effective with the P08.

if you bought it from your LHS then it's legit.

That would depend on the shop. I know a few pro shop owners that would have no problem selling knockoff product if it meant they could pocket a few extra bucks.

It doesn't look like a euro retail version to me (color pattern is a bit different to the US version).

And you don't get the specific country tag (finland, denmark, sweden, Czech rep), unless they changed something on the APX.

A retail euro version has the curve and flex infos a la prostock.

Need more pics actually.

Or maybe it's the answer of Bauer to the loads and loads of US versions we find everywhere in scandinavian countries
